What if I raise my budget to $300 for speakers? Pre amped.

That should get you a set of Audioengine no? Or wait, do they have grills? From my research and looking, most near field monitors have no grills :\.

At that price, check out Adam Audio.

If you can raise it a little, pick up some used Legacy Audio Studio monitors. The Legacys are incredible performers- the new Legacy Studio HD is the best 2 way, for the money, I've heard!

+1 on the Adams! A friend uses them in his home studio. Sounds very good near field.

Check out Definitive Technology, please!
As was stated in post #26 >> I reccomend the SM350. They are
nice, and they measure +/- 2db from 200 to 10khz >> For some
people they may sound a little bright, because they do not have
a elevated or boomy/mushy bass sound >> The bass is tight and
controlled. They will not cover up poor quality, or harsh recordings.
There may be better speakers - however, not easy to beat them at
their current close-out price.

You seem to be going around in a circle - it may be time for you to
try something out in your home.

Notice, the Def Techs are exactly grills. It is a grill-cloth-sock that covers the entire speaker, other than the cap up top.
