Best movies for home theater?

I'm wondering if there is a "MUST HAVE" list for movies with great sound effects to watch on home theater.

My favorite is "Standing in the Shadows of Motown" which is a documentry about the Funk Brothers - the guys who played the instruments on some of the biggest hits that came from Motown. There are several concert clips and the music is fantastic - it's available at Blockbuster if you want to see it.

Any recommendations on movies to see? It can be ANY type of movie (action, etc) .

Thanks!

Master and Commander is a great movie and has some AWESOME sound effects.
The Fifth Element is another one with a good soundtrack.

Basically, look for cool action movies with DTS. The DTS track will sound insanely awesome about 90% of the time.

Totally agree with the above posts. I'd like to add the following films, listed by their strongest technical suit (IMO):

Audio: Saving Private Ryan (liked the visuals, loved the audio)

Video: What Dreams May Come (so-so content and audio, but will give your video section a workout)

Both: Matrix trilogy, Band of Brothers (if you haven't seen it, do ... an outstanding mini-series)

Also, I've read/heard a number of equipment reviewers use Heat as a reference ... guess I'll have to watch that one again ;)

And thus ends my not-so-succinct reply :p

The sound design and visual beauty of house of flying daggers is perhaps a better suggestion, or hero or hidden dragon. You dont have to like kung fu either to enjoy them- saying that alot of people i know dont like them. I saw a demonstation of home 3d sound from four carefully front placed speakers and flying daggers was the movie they chose to show with it (while it was just playing in surround).

or porn.

Just watched the DTS track on Jurrasic Park III & was definately impressed with the surround effects & the amount of LFE.

here are some more great surround movies:
Top Gun ( DTS: ES )
The Incredibles
Any of the Star Wars
Predator (DTS Track)

Band of Brothers. The audio mix on this set is absolutely amazing. Whoever recorded and mixed this thing did their homework on what an actual engagement with an enemy is like.

Fifth Element is always an eye-popping favorite with a great soundtrack - make sure you get the DTS version.

Practically anything from Pixar, although I think Nemo and the Incredibles are probably the best.

You mean besides LOTR extended & Star Wars? How about the old & new Fantasia? I think that they're must haves.

If you like music DVD's, try The Last Waltz.

I completely agree with evrything that has been said so far and I'd like to add X-Men 2 to the list. Sounds sublime on my systems anyway....

Oh yeah and U-571 (or another number, that film with Harvey Keitel about stealing the german decoder in WWII). I believe it received an oscar for the sound.

I agree with most of what's been mentioned, and would add:

Pearl Harbor, The Patriot, Titanic, Apollo 13, Saving Private Ryan, and, of late, additionally,

The Last Samurai, Van Helsing, and Angel Heart.

I still love the shocking audio points in "The Grudge", & Yoshi running around my room:eek: . "Twister", has good storm input, even though it's a bad movie. Janet Jackson-Hawaii concert is one of my best home concerts.:D
