Heya Guys/Gals,

I just bought a house and currently working on a 100 different things, but the lady of the house has approved some surround sound speakers... if they are unobtrusive... so I was thinking about some in-ceiling speakers. But I have a tight budget and can only spend about 250-300 when the time comes to order. Any one have any recommendations? I saw that Def Tech has some, but I have never heard them in person, and not really any reviews online of them... so any thoughts?

Thanks, Gaige

Mazersteven made some good recommendations; I also like my Def Tech ceiling spkrs!

I recommend in-ceiling speakers with pivoting or directional woofer, and tweeter.

The Audioholics store carries MB Quart. I recommend 6.5 or larger.

I also highly recommend

Mazersteven has made some very good recommendations. :) If have Def-Tech ceiling speakers for surround and I can also recommend them. They sound excellent and are very unobtrusive; I have an off-white colored ceiling and the speaker covers are also an off-white color

I just wanted to clarify... I can only spend about 250-300 for the PAIR... not per each... just in case that wasn't clear.

In-ceiling speakers

I lot of manufacturers make in-ceiling models in your <$300/pair price range. What are you using for the front 3 channels? Try to get something similar if possible for the surrounds.

Ha, my front three is quite the menagerie... the l/r are just temp Aiwa speakers from an old stereo system. They have a built in woofer, and were still worlds better than my old Sony satellites. The center is an Infinity PC250. I want to get a set of Def Techs someday, like the BP7004's or something, but no cash right now. I have quite the hodgepodge of equipment. But I run it off of a Onkyo TX-SR605 AV receiver, and have a PS3 as blu-ray player, so that isnt too bad... lol

Speaker upgrade.

I would recommend an upgrade of the front channels. It is much better to have a good 2.1 or 3.1 system then a 5.1 system with mediocre 5.1 system.

If asthetics are also a factor on the fronts, check out in-wall or on-wall speakers. They have the RBH/EMP on-walls in the AH store for $100 each.

Also, FYI, I used some Phenoix Gold in-ceiling speakers in my distrubed audio system (kitchen, bedroom, bathroom, study, etc.). The build quality and sound is good for a budget speaker and they would work for an entry level HT. About $40/pair on Amazon.
