Hi,

I am new to all the HT stuff and am about to take the plunge. I have looked at all the local stores, best buy, hhgregg and so on, and so far I havent seen anything that really jumps out at me. I have a room that is 16x16 with one of the sides being open to another room. I am on a super tight budget, but want pretty good sound and rock solid bass. I believe a 5.1 system would be fine for me. I would love to keep this under a 1000.00 with fair to good sound. Please point me in the right direction because best buy sucks.

thanks

Is this budget including a receiver? If so, I would look at speaker systems from The Speaker Company, and receivers from Accessories4less.com. If not, I would look at packages from SVS or Elemental Designs.

Something else you might consider, depending on how good you want this thing to sound in the end, is building it a piece at a time. By that I mean, buy the receiver and front two mains now with a large chunk of your budget. Then save up and buy the subwoofer later. After that, save up and get a center, and after that, the surround speakers. By the time you are done you can have something quite a bit more magnificent, and you won't have dropped a huge amount of money all at once, and best of all you can enjoy the thing all along the way. What's also nice is you have more time to research your components so you can be more certain of the best purchase, and you can see how much each piece adds to the overall sound.
