Can someone help me with advice on floorstanding speakers with the best performance in the low-mid and low frequency spectrum.
I am looking at pairing them with my current bookshelves that are a little too mid and high freq. minded.

I've always been impressed with these. Now, if you wish to narrow the scope of your question a little with a bit more detail, maybe other options will come into "focus".

To be a little more direct than Markw...:p

What's your budget?

Also - what do you mean specifically by "pairing with" your current speakers?

And - have you ruled out getting a subwoofer to extend bass response (if that is the primary concern)?

The Revel Salon 2, KEF 207/2, and Linkwitz Orion are 3 examples of full-range speakers that have great low-mid and low-frequency response.:D

Reply to zhimbo's queries: specifically the speakers need to be able to reproduce instrument textures (example: the type of percussion instrument should come across clearly). While this is a function of bass, a sub woofer fails to suffice. This attribute may have more to do with the type of mid range and woofer. Also how they come together. I am no expert so will rely on inputs from y'all.
My budget is ~$1,500. I am looking to play these in tandem with my existing bookshelves. Sound compatibility will be a consideration; I plan to ensure the speaker auditions take care of that.

Generally, the front three speakers should "match (all be of the same mnufacturer/line) so as to assure "timbre matching" which assures coherence of the front sound field. Surrounds should also match for MC music but are less critical for movies

IOW, plan on getting a new center to match your new mains if sound is that critical. Either that, or simply get/stick to mains that match your center.

Hi, I was able to audition a number of speakers lately and found the Wharfedale 10.5 to be quite convincing in instrument textures. However the speaker has it's flaws in the mid range with an overdose of bass. The one core difference I see in this speaker is the use of a 50mm mid range. I am wonderin if this diaphragm has a role to play in producing such convincing textures. Haven't seen such a mid range in any of the other speakers I've auditioned so far.

Focal Chorus 807V

The Chorus 807V has a 7-inch Polyglass mid-bass driver and a 1-inch Magnesium/Aluminum inverted dome tweeter.

I demod these myself and was absolutely blown away by their low and midrange output. This is an all around great speaker. Not sure what your budget is but these have an MSRP of $1100. If my budget was smaller, I would've done a 5.1 of these instead of the PSB Synch 1's synch system I built. This 807V Bookshelf smokes the tower version. If you get them at a decent streetprice, I think they'd be the best $700 you could ever spend on a pair of bookshelves with thick lows, and mids in mind.

Timbre matching what you have now I think would be pretty impossible without opting to go with the same thing that you are reportedly not that crazy about. Maybe get one pair for now and look to replace the ones you aren't entirely happy with at some point.

I'm not a professional but I know what I like when I hear it, and I really liked these.
