So I recently bought my neighbor's 52 inch rear-projection TV for $200. It is about 7-10 years old and is just a standard 4:3 set without any frills (except for being huge). It seems to work fine (aside from a slight blue tint on the left half of the screen that is barely noticeable on black and white movies...but still annoying). It also only has the RCA composite inputs.
Anyway, I probably won't be upgrading to a better picture quality TV for another few years, so a super high end DVD player would be wasted on my set. So what is out there that would work for my TV? Would just any old player do? The things I'm looking for are good anamorphic downconversion, the ability to play all kinds of discs (DVD+/-R, divx movies etc), and the ability to play scratched DVDs well (I rent a lot of movies from my local library). Also, is there such a thing as a "zoom out" feature? I notice that movies that I play on my tv as opposed to my computer or something have a tiny bit cut off of the sides usually. Is there a way to "windowbox" your dvds when you watch them?
Anyway, any model suggestions would be nice...I'd rather get something tha is just good enough for my tv now and get a better player whenever I upgrade my tv. Of course if there is a budget player out that that also has progressive scan, upconversion and component outputs (and whatever else all your fancy tvs can make use of) it can't hurt
thanks!
