You should get lots of suggestions, but I will throw the one that think is worth listening to:

Ascend Acoustics CBM-170

I haven't heard it, but the Axiom M3 should be on your radar, as well as the Epos ELS-3.

Aren't the Epos ELS-3 4 Ohm speakers?

I haven't chosen a receiver yet, but I think most are 8 Ohm impedance.

PSB 2B (not 25B)- You can snag these holdovers for about $250 or less, used to be $400
I own these speakers, I love these speakers.

Monitor Audio Bronze B2- MSRP of $399, you should be able to pick up for darn close to $350 - I love the way these speakers sound. If I had found them before the PSB's we'd had had a coin toss, the two are very different sounding, but very enjoyable

Paradigm Titans or Focus's- MSRP of about $220 US/$299 US, will shame many speakers costing twice as much, for $350 you could probably move up a class or two in Paradigm's speakers, but to me these are the true stars in the performance series lineup.

I picked these 3 because I have heard them all. I really like all 3 speakers and they are all very well reviewed by the majority of reviewers and consumers alike.

What is "mid-priced"? You can find some good deals on HKs and Yamaha recievers online.

You can try totem, I do not know if there prices go that low but if you want performance out of a book shelf type speaker they are the way to go.

Privateer,

Are those your speakers? I knew I recognized that Hawk woofer somewhere. Click on the larger photo to see it up close.

Now check this out. The second, third, and forth row of woofers.

No but I did demo a pair and went with the ML's instead. All those woofers a 5" and 7", the woofer on the hawk is 5.5".

Yeah, but the M22's are $440/pr, and by all accounts from people that have heard both, comparable to the $328/pr Ascend CBM-170's, with the biggest difference being in how the highs are presented, especially at higher volumes.

My two favorites are:

NHT SB2 (I have a pair I may be letting go soon if you're interested)
Energy C3

Both are incredibly musical and engaging and of all the bookshelves I've heard at this price point (I've heard at least 8 respected brands) these two are by far my favs.

Are the NHT SB3's in my price range? Are they better than the SB2's?

I saw and read about the Axiom M22ti's and was VERY impressed!

And if I could bump it up to $440 a pair, I am sure that would open up a whole new can of worms!

What speakers are comparable to / better than the M22ti's...in the same price range?

The SB3s are supposed to be a bit better than the SB2s. They get fantastic bass for a bookshelf model. However, I believe their retail is $600 a pair so you'd probably have to get used.

I just put in a pair of Axiom M3tis in a bedroom, 14' wide, 13' deep and vaulted ceilings. For $300 a pair I think they are a great bargain. I won't push them too hard in the bedroom but as they break in, they are really getting to sound great! Good luck!

you can grab the factory seconds m22ti's for 400 including tax and shipping to california.

the seconds mean there might be a scratch or scuff, but i couldnt even find anything on mine, as is the case with a lot of people that buy them. The sound quality is the same, only really tiny physical blemishes. still overbudget but just thought id let you know.
