Best audio: XLR to 3.5 mm or Toslink to mini-Toslink?

Hi,
I recently bought a NAD C510 (see attached picture). I am thinking about connecting my Chromecast audio using either the AES/EBU interface on the pre-amp or the optical interface. From an audio quality perspective, which interface is better to use? I know that connecting a Chromecast audio to my pre-amp is not the best fit but this is what I have. What do you think? XLR-to-3.5mm or Toslink-to-mini-Toslink? Appreciate your input and support.

I've used both the built-in dac on my chromecast audio units on my older non-digital gear as well as via the optical connection, they're both fine. I don't know how you plan to get a digital signal without using the optical interface, tho....or please fill me in on how that would work with a simple 3.5 mm to XLR cable....

I would go with the Toslink option if its available.
