Subwoofer performance is a question of application. Many subs are made for live sound applications. Most of them go to 35 hz which is enough to handle low B on 5 string bass. You are right, they give up lower frequencies in return for more volume. There isn't any reason for them to go below 35 hz.

Some subs are designed for monitoring recording and mastering. They normally have a full frequency response. Here's an example of one from one of the most respected makers of studio monitors in the business. http://www.genelecusa.com/7271a/specs/ You can trust their measurements.

You can find whatever you want in pro audio at virtually any price level.

I want to get an EP 2500 to power a couple Vandersteen 2cs, but I want to make sure I get the most out of it. What do I need to do in order to do that?

I would like to do a fan mod. which fan is the best for a replacement and how do I install correctly?

Do I need to use the balanced inputs or does it matter? I will use a Pioneer 819 receiver as the pre (unless someone can recommend a better HT receiver with dolby HD and DTS HD for the money)

Can I just plug this beast into my surge protector or does something need to be done with my breaker. I keep seeing something about a 20A breaker. Does this matter?

Thanks for the help!

I'll bet you can power those speakers without the fan.
I'd try them in your existing surge protector.
Those speakers are not a heavy load for an amp, and likewise the circuit.
You'll never use all the power that amp has. So give it a shot.

Hey Mike,

I'm thinking of getting an EP2500 to power a 15" sub. How do you hook up this amp to a home receiver or pre-amp? I assume you have to get some sort of RCA to pro-amp adapter. Also, how do you connect the speaker to the outputs of the amp? In looking at the picture of the back of the amp, I don't recognize the output connections.

the back of the amp has regular speaker binding posts, but it has some sort of cover you have to remove to see the binding posts.

the weird looking ones are speakon speaker connections pro folks use.

i wish they had these nice looking versions back then:

that looks pretty nice, i like the looks of this better than the EP2500. Have they put a quieter fan in yet?

that is one of my hang ups with doing this diy sub build is having the ep2500 and the dcx on my rack with my other equipment.. It looks really cheap in comparison. whcih it kind of is.

ok I got an ep2500 used for $200 local its in great shape except for a scratch on the top whcih i have already touched up and you can barely see it.

is there anyway to test it out of i dont have A, the sub built much less the driver. B, scared to attach my main speakers to it and C well I guess thats all ..

also has anyone figured out a cheap way to get the highpass filter(i like the deal at parts express) but in an XLR plug rather than an RCA plug? it seems like a waste to me to go RCA to the filter just to have to go to XLR into the amp.. when I have XLR outs on my pre/pro. otherwise it looks liek I have to do the DCX ??

last question does the fan come on all the time or only when the amp gets hot? will it be that obnoxious?

The fan on my 2500 runs at all times but with the fan mod. I can hardly tell.

Screw making your own when you can get a single for less than 10 bucks.

Make sure to get any other cables you need too since shipping is flat rate.

I gotta get a few of these soon.

Just attach it to your mains. How much power the speakers receive is determined by the volume control. The test amp in my workshop is a Jands 400W pro amp attached to some 15W vintage Celestions which survive fine because I don't crank it beyond what the speakers can cope with; they sound bad long before damage will occur.

Use an active converter such as the Samson S-Convert. Otherwise, your consumer line level outs from the receiver(most need the adapter) are not likely high enough in voltage to driver the EP2500 properly, which expects a high voltage pro line level signal.

It will work fine on your main speakers. The fan always runs and must be replaced with a specific matsushita model to run silent.

Guys, If I want to use an ep2500 to power a couple tower speaker and use a new Pioneer 819 (BTW, at around $260 is this reciever the best receiver for the buck?) as my Pre amp am I going to need a line leveler? WmAx I think recommended another product from Behringer to accomplish that. Was it the EURORACK PRO RX1602?

Also, it seems everyone is getting RCA to XLR is that necassary to get the best performance and if so, why?

Beside the fan mod, line leveler and rca to xlr cables is there anything I'm missing for a proper ep2500 setup?

Sorry for all the questions, but I appreciate the help!
