Behringer A500 Humm

Hey Guys,

I received my Behringer A500 amp today, and after the hook up I must say that the sound coming from the speakers are much fuller. I cant say that it sounds better. I will say as I did before that the sound tend to fill the room more.

What I am experiencing though is a humming coming through the speakers, for some reason it also affects the center channel even though the amp is hooked up only to the L/R front. I think that it a bit strange. For you guys that have experienced this humming, what did you do to eliminate this? If you can provide a picture of what you bought or did that would be great.

Thanks

Fowl

Sounds like a ground loop issue. Is that hum there in the speakers it power when the interconnect to the A500 are removed?

If I disconnect the RCA cable I do not hear it in the L/R front speakers, however even if I turn of the power to the A500 and power up the receiver I still hear the humming in the center channel.

How do I solve this ground loop issue?

Hi Fowl,

Some receivers have a switch on the back to fix this. On my Arcam, it's labelled "Ground Lift".

It's odd that you're now hearing humming from the center. Is the power lead for the A500 lying over the speaker cables? If you're turning off the power (from the wall) to the A500 then it really shouldn't be affecting anything.

Thanks guys for your suggestions, however I can go to the store now to buy the item suggested. For those who have had this problem with their A500 what did you do?

Please help:(

i didnt have a hum with a speaker that was not connected to the A500. but on the ones that were connected and had a little staticky sound coming from them ... I used an RCA to 1/4" TRS and used the balanced input on the A500.

Ditto to what Mike C said, I used an RCA to 1/4" for my A500s when I experienced any humming. Not sure how/why your center channel would be picking up a hum from the A500, but these would provide a cheap solution to any hum that may be coming from the amp itself.

These can be picked up at any Radio shack for a couple of dollars... -TD

mike c,

when you say balanced input, I am a bit green to this and not too sure what you mean. There are some 1/4 trs that has two balck circles on the bottom and some with one. Which one did you use?

look at tomd51's pic. wherever on the A500 that fits ... stick it in :D

and then connect your RCA connector to the adapter.

Thanks guys, did not see that pic before I made the post. I now see that it is the one with the single black circle at the bottom. Will go to radio shack tomorrow and get two.

On a second note though, Is there any difference in sound using the 1/4 TRC over the RCA cable, or vise versa?

if you count losing the hum as a difference in sound ... yeah!
seriously though, there's no difference.

Now if I can get you to fill in and make sense out of the rest of my posts, we'll have something there... ;) -TD

Let's do another experiment.

Disconnect your cable TV totally from the system by unplugging the video and audio cable from the wall or cable box and unplug the cable TV box if you have one as a ground loop can come from that too and can get in via the TV to the audio system connection or direct to the receiver from the cable in any and all ways. Once it is totally disconnected, see if there is still a hum. If not, there is a fix for that, if it continues, then it is through the power cable of the A500. Then, try to run a ground wire from the chassis of the A500 to the other components, until the hum stops.
The let us know.

To add
Try plugging the A500 into your Surge protector , this might clean up any dirty power .

OK Guys,

Went to the store today and bought the 1/4 TRS, plugged them in and Woo Hoo :D it works. Virtually no humm, now I am a happy camper. Next step to put me in more debt, is to change my PDR 10 for better subs.

congrats!

now if only behringer would just fix that. (or at least throw in a pair of TRS adapters/connectors in the box)
