Beginner sound system

Any recommended alternatives and/or comments regarding a system I am looking at purchasing? Looking at a price tag of about $4,000 for a Marantz SR-6009 receiver, Monitor Audio Gold 100 bookshelf speaker pair, stands, and a Panamax MR4300.

Not really beginner gear but sounds like a nice start at least :) Why the Panamax? Plans for expansion to a multi-ch system? Use primarily for music or movies or what mix?

Try the Yamaha CX-A5001 and MX-A5000, both are phenomenal pieces check them out.

My recommendation for speakers, would be to check out Klipsch. The sound is a bit forward, but lively sounding, opposed to just sounding like a speaker.

I'd skip the Panamax as well. Not really necessary. With a $4K budget (if 2ch), I'd be looking at something nicer than the Golds, not that they aren't good.

Paradigm is a great speaker company as well, try to find a place so you can sit down and listen to different brands of speakers. And see what your ears prefer. Mine prefer Klipsch. Also, if you love movies Klipsch is second to no one.

agreed. For 2k/pair of bookshelves one would expect better on and off axis measurements:

Thanks for the reply. More of a re-entry than beginner I guess. Panamax was suggested by Crutchfield. Music and movies. Was hoping I could get away with two quality fronts, a nice center and sub. Do not have the ability to wire surrounds

Thanks. Will def check out Yamaha, which was the first hi end receiver I purchased back in high school (with boxy but nice sounding Advents).

Have always liked klipsch, and they are about the only ones out of the group I'm looking at that I CAN listen to. but their freq ranges are not as wide as the Golds I was considering - does that not matter?
So if no Panamax, what - a basic off the shelf surge protector?
Thank you all for taking the time to reply.

I don't understand the need for the Panamax, its a fancy surge strip....do you have electricity issues where you live? If so I think whole house surge protection is a much better use of the money.

Why not get the LCR all together? Does MA offer a center to match? What sub(s) are you thinking about?

Ok, I should have advised i am buying for music first, movies second. Will likely never have/need more than 5 channels. Will look at the yamahas, but don't see a need for 11 channels. Was considering the MA 6 center. The sub would depend on the limitations of the fronts
