Beginner Home Theater Advice Please!

Hello!

Its always been my dream to have an awesome home theater setup, and finding there is a lot that goes into it.

Hoping for a good surround sound experience and I've been recommended to use an AV receiver, but I have never used one.

My setup will be odd, but hoping to find something that works. My TV will be up in shelving\cabinets that are going to be built onto the wall and will extend out about a foot maybe two. In addition to the TV I am going to have a ceiling mounted projector screen that comes down in front of all the cabinets and the TV, so I don't believe a soundbar would be good at all as if i'm using the projector screen, the sound will be from behind the screen.

The projector I am leaning towards is the BenQ x3000i and will be ceiling mounted on opposite side of the room.

Hoping for advice on an AV receiver with surround speakers for up to $1200. Any advice would be greatly appreciated, thank you!

a) There are acoustically transparent screens.
b) $1200 in today's market isn't much. Everything now is more expensive than it was five years ago and by much.
You may want to start with a good 2.1 or 3.1 if you can swing a great 3-way center at a cheap price. Honestly, even 2.1 would be a stretch unless you look for 2nd hand receiver and speakers.
One option would be to buy these bookshelves and use one of them as a vertical center, behind or under the screen
This would be good sub for smaller to medium rooms:

Yeah I’d get a bigger budget you’d be lucky to find anything for that price unless your going used, I can’t upgrade right now no job. Get a 2.1channel system of some sort for now, or a soundbar until you have it decided what you want.
you probably gotta waste money on a cheaper avr just to even run it which you’ll end up wanting a more expensive one soon after.
avr prices have doubled or tripled, my fingers crossed mine doesn’t die anytime soon.
If you can afford custom shelf’s which cost a boatload, surely you can figure out how many speakers and what you want. I’m wishing I spend more money when I had it, now I gotta struggle with a weak sub in my set up because my original one was too large won’t fit . Rough times for me right now, rsl (mentioned I the post before mine) is a cheaper brand but avr aren’t cheap. You just missed Klipch reference sale if they still go on sale? I never checked . Good brand for a cinema because horns, or jbl etc.

I'd start with a 3.1 system from RSL. For $1271 you can get a Denon AVR-S660H, three CG23 speakers, and a speedwoofer 10s MKii sub. As money allows add two more CG23's for surround duty.

If you have any drawings of your room or photos so we get a better idea of the final room layout that would be helpful to ensure any recommendations will fit into your setup properly.

Thank you all!

@Kingnoob, Yeah I see that reference sale on at Costco, but its all out of stock right now. Hopefully that comes back on at some point. And yeah, that's what I'm seeing more and more is to just get a 2.1 and wait for more money.

@NINaudio, Thank you much for the advice. I was looking at Costco last night and maybe you know if this is a good deal or not. They have an "Onkyo TX-NR6050 7.2Channel AVR" for $399.99. Also are selling the Klpsch Reference Dolby Atmos 5.0.2 for $899.99, which seems good. Also they have a "Denon AVR S760H 7.2ch 8K for $499. Good deals? Are those speakers compatible?

@BMXTRIX, The room i'm in is just a rectangle mostly. Its 12' X 21.5' with a 6' corner closet. Display to sitting will be in the 12' direction.

Again, thank you all very much for the advice, its helping quite a bit!

I have no experience with Onkyo. That's a decent price for the Denon though. If you're not opposed to refurbished items, accessories for less has great prices:

That Klipsch package includes nonideal atmos speakers (built in to the towers) and no subwoofers. I'm not a fan of Klipsch's better gear, much less their lower end stuff. You'd be much better off with the RSL's in my opinion.

why did Klipsch drop the compression drivers? In most there lines except rf7 towers and up.
maybe rsl is better I can’t say I’ve not heard Klipsch reference or RSL speakers.
Bounce house Atmos is a gimmick though, or does it work on small rooms??
