Been out of the loop for a while need some input

I have been kicking around the idea of weather or not to upgrade my reciever for a while. Mainly to take advantage of HDMI so I could more easily add a blu-ray player and decode the newer audio formats. This would be in my dedicated theater room which we use a lot for just general watching TV plus movies.

I have had good luck out of my current Yamaha so I would probably be most comfortable sticking with that brand. The big question is which one of the newer recievers would be comparable power wise to the RX-V1400 I have now? The specs are formatted just a little differently now making it a little more interesting trying to compare. I don't want to change recievers and find out I took a step backward. I don't turn it up all the time but occasionally we do enjoy an action movie cranked up pretty good.

I do have another question my TV is also older but I have no intention of replacing it any time soon. Currently it is hooked up via component video. It doesnt have an HDMI input but does have DVI. I assume I can just run a HDMI/DVI adapter and hook the video up that way from the new reciever correct? It does only support 1080i though is that an issue? I would assume their are recievers out there that upscale/downscale and allow you to select the output reslolution settings that are compatible with your monitor correct?

Initially I would probably leave my current DVD player hooked up will the newer recievers take the component input from a DVD and output it through the HDMI? I have read some only output what they input not sure if that is how they all are. Probably a simple question but if not I assume the reciever/remote can be programed to switch the input on the TV and would just require another connection between the reciever/TV?

My laptop has a HDMI output & a bluray player in it so I could use that to begin with before I purchase a dedicated bluray player.

I ended up winning a Sony 5.1 speaker/sub setup at a banquet I was at I intially thought about sticking it in the living room but I would need a second receiver and would need to do some serious wiring though the walls. Neither of which I am real thrilled about. If I replace the 1400 with a new reciever I could use this one in the living room or I could sell it and the Sony stuff to get some more cash towards a better reciever.

setup is as follows
Reciever: Yamaha RX-V1400
HDTV: Mitsubishi 65" WS-65313
Main speakers: Klipsch RF-52
Subwoofer: B & W ASW600
Surrounds: Klipsch RS-25
Rear surrounds: Klipsch RB-51
Center channel: Klipsch RC-52
DVD player: Yamaha DVD S540
DirectV reciever: HDDVR HR22-100
OTA tuner: Directv AM21

Here is a thread on my theater. http://forums.audioholics.com/forums/pros-joes-systems-gallery/61408-my-ht-has-been-together-while.html

Any input on a decent receiver?

Thanks

I think any of the Yamaha RX-A1000 & up will be fine.

Just buy it from Amazon and if it doesn't work like you expect, just return it with free shipping back to Amazon.

That is kind of where I thinking I would end up. Looks like a comparable unit is going to be in the $750-1K range eh? I may have to save my pennies for a bit longer.

In regards to your TV, yes you can certainly use an HDMI to DVI cable. You will have to use something else to get audio directly to your TV like RCA cables. I had an old RP TV that I did this with.

In regards to your DVD player, going component to HDMI is probably going to be a nightmare. That's EXACTLY what the genius's who developed HDCP don't want you to do. If you go that route I think the best resolution you are going to be able to get is 480p. But if all we're talking about are regular DVD's maybe that isn't an issue for you.

Yeah the DVD player would be for regular DVDs for the time being. 480P is all it is currently anyway, as from my understanding the 1400 is just a simple video switch it doesnt do any conversion.

I downloaded the manual for the RX-A1010 and from the looks of their little chart it shows input from 480p component going out on 1080i HDMI On paper it sounds good but real world may be another issue.

Yamaha RX-Z7 on ebay for starting bid of $740. $825 Buy It Now. Worth watching. I switched from a 1400 to a Z7, and was very impressed. It is NOT MY AUCTION.

Just sold my 1400 on ebay for $150 + $50 for shipping. For some reason, the 1400's are selling good on there. That is why I listed mine. It has just been sitting around for several years. Sold first listing. It was an impressive receiver for the money at the time of my purchase.

20 minutes left on the Z7. Only @ $750 right now. Somebody is about to get a smoking deal!

Yeah that is a smoking deal. If I had a spare $800 laying around I would have jumped on it.

I did end up picking up a RX-V471 for the living room to go with the speakers I won. Seems like a nice unit with the HDMI switching setup and operation is quite a bit easier than my system in the basement.

First thing I noticed is exactly why I want to make sure when I get a replacement for the 1400 that its up to the task. I have to crank the new setup up quite a bit (like +5db) before it even starts to be "loud".

With my 1400 and the Klipsch speakers if you get much past -15db I think your ears would start to bleed.

Granted the speakers are also quite a bit smaller but I think the extra power the 1400 packs is probably more of a factor.
