Very unfortunate. Hopefully they can overcome the taboo and legal implications to lead a happy life together.

I just hope the poor child doesn't have any genetic defects when he/she is born.

This, basically. Beyond that it's just a really unfortunate circumstance. It's entirely the fault of the parents (er.. grandparents(es?)) for not keeping in contact with their children and between siblings.

Brutal. So, neither parent even thought to ask the name of the person their child was dating? Their kid is going to be a genetic nightmare.

For a situation like this (first generation) it's highly unlikely.
Really? I figured the more closely related the parents are, the more likely of such problems. But then, I'm no expert - by training.....or experience...

I'm no expert either, but our biology teacher told us that the rate for defects goes from around 2% to 25% when siblings reproduce. For first cousins it drops down to 12%.

Edit: Found this... A 1994 study found a mean excess mortality with inbreeding among first cousins of 4.4%.[53] A study of 29 offspring resulting from brother-sister or father-daughter incest found that 20 had congenital abnormalities, including four directly attributable to autosomal recessive alleles.[54]

What are the odds? You leave Africa to go to school in England and you hook up with your sister???

Seriously, I have no life.
(Years later, at a family get-together), "Hey Uncle Daddy- come here for a minute!".

That's not a family tree, it's a family twig.
