Basic hookup question

I'm trying to minimize the cables to a tv above a fireplace that we are installing. Will it work to run an HDMI cable from the cable box to the tv and a separate audio cable to a home theater system or does the HDMI cable eliminate the option to run the audio to another unit. I'd like to run an HDMI cable from the cable box and the DVD player to a 2-1 HDMI switch and then just have one cable going to the tv, but I'm having trouble getting audio from the cable box to the home theatre system. Any help would be greatly appreciated since once the fireplace walls go up, I can't change the cable setup. Thanks.

Don't put TVs over fireplaces. There is too much heat. It will shorten the life of the TV and can be a fire hazard. Also the TV is too high for comfort when hung over a fireplace. The location you have chosen is a bad mistake!

What cables are you planning to use for the audio and what are they all connected to?

I was planning on using basic RCA type audio cables to run from the cable box to the home theater system. I'm just not sure if the cable box will still put out audio signal through these jacks if I have an HDMI cable coming from the box already. We have a long narrow room so I don't think the height is going to be an issue as far as mounting it above the fireplace and the fireplace will only be used occasionally so the TV won't be exposed to that much heat, but thanks for the advice.
