Basic Home Theatre / Notebook set up

Hi All,

I'm probably asking some simple questions here, but I just want to make sure I know what I'm doing before I go and spend some $$$ on stuff I don't need.

My aim is simple; to run everything audio and video through my notebook, with the exception of my satellite signal. I have a Creative Audigy 2 ZS PCMCIA Audio card, and I'm considering purchasing the creative DTS-610 Home theatre encoder. Now my question is, will purchasing the DTS-610 Home Theatre using the digital optical connection to set up my sound, and connecting my laptop to my Television give me everything I need, and also what is the best way to get video from my laptop? Is S-Video the way to go for that? Oh and one other thing; what exactly is the IEE1394 (or something like that) socket in the back of my laptop for? Can I use that to connect it to my TV

I'm sorry, I'm sure my questions are pretty stupid, but I would be grateful for anyone to clarify this for me. :) :)

Thanks
Luke

for video out, S-Video will work just fine.

IEE1394 (aka Firewire) is a connection type that is used to connect DV camcorders and the like to your computer. Some external hard drives and cd/dvd burners also use this. Keep in mind that Apple owns the "firewire" name, so most PC versions of the stuff is called IEE1394. I have no idea if you can use it as a video out, but I would just go the easy route, and use the S-Video. Keep in mind TV resolution will be pretty bad, I think it's 320x200 or something to that effect.

ok, so the 610 is a kinda ghetto way of adding DDlive technology to any existing sound card...it's still analog to digital conversion though, so don't expect "cd quality" since it does have to go through digital to analog conversion on the PC's side, then analog to digital on the 610's side, then converts back to analog on the reciever's side. That's a lot of conversions, two more than I would prefer.

If you do not plan on playing any DRM audio tracks, I would try ouy the SPDIF output on the Audigy2 ZS before buying another component. Keep in mind SPDIF on your card is optical, but when dealing with a notebook computer, many prefer optical out since there is less chance of any kind of noise finding it's way into the cable....and any of you who has hooked up a pair of good headphones to a notebooks' built-in audio know how noisy those puppies are :)

edit: almost forgot, you can find SPDIF to TOSlink optical cables if you look around enough.

I'll second the noise...I have my MDR-7506 phones running into my laptop...NOISY. I heard what these things should really sound like when I ran them out of my vintage Yamaha CR-1020 receiver. Now THERE'S a sound.
