Ok guys.....just moved into a new house and have a half way decent sized spot in the basement to have a dedicated H/T room. The space is about 10x25 with only one opening half way down one wall on the side. There is currently steel bracing running up from the floor to the ceiling (I will attach some pictures when I get home) and I am planning on putting some sort of plywood or thin composite material up all the way around and putting insulation behind that. And then putting some sort of stage curtain in front of it as I don't want to frame and drywall the basement as it is not my house but I am renting. Also I will be adding carpet to the floor.

I am looking for a projector/screen combination that is less that $1500. Primary input source will be a HTPC, and it will be used mostly for movies and a little bit for gaming.

Also I had some questions about acoustic treatment and such as I have never applied any as of yet.

There's a ton of good info over at AVS Forums. With that budget, I'd recommend a DIY screen and a Sanyo PLV-Z2000. The PJ is about $1500 after rebates.

I put together this system for less than $2000 including the chairs. The AV equipment was:

HC1500 projector $700
AVR247 Receiver $230
In wall speakers 2 pair $100 refurbed
Already owned the front and center
Philips upconverting DVD player $40
Wiring from Monoprice $100
screen - DIY using blackout cloth - $20

I know it isn't high end but the infrastructure is in place for any upgrade

I would post a link but this is my first post and the forum software forbids it until I have 5 posts. PM me for a link.

I'd look heavily into acoustic treatments, especially with exposed walls. The best thing about treatments is when you move you can take them with you. GIK acoustics has some great prices and will go out of their way to help you with your setup. That's where I got mine and I highly recommend them. Glen from GIK frequents the room acoustics forum and often helps people regardless of who they choose to buy from.

you can pick up a nice Optima 720p projector and Da-Lite perm-a wall screen for under $1500.

cinder block walls exposed in a basement will need treatment. check the stickys under Room Acoustics and System Layout from the main page.
