Banana Plug Question???

I have just purchased some banana plugs. They are the solderless kind. They fit nice and tight in my speakers and my reciever. The only problem I may be having is I am going to have to fold my speaker wire over to get to fit nice and tight in the banana plug.

My question is: Will this disturb the flow of the signal flowing into my speaker by folding the bare part of the wire and inserting it into my banana plug?

I know this is probably a stupid question but my thinking is that by folding the bare wire the signal would be try to work against itself at the end of my wire.]

I would rather not use banana plugs, but the output board for my surrounds in my brand new reciever was fried because my girlfriend decided she would hook my new reciever up and had a copper of stray wires that were touching.

This site has been extremely helpful. Thanks again

As long as the bare wire is making good contact with the banana plug, it should be fine reagardless of how it is twisted, folded, bent, etc. If there is not good contact it's usually pretty evident from the crackling sound cutting in and out when the wire is moved or strained.

Decent banana plugs are usually as good as bare wiring. Folding the wire doesn't matter at all - if you wrap bare wire round a speaker post then it won't get dizzy and forget where to go. ;)

Once it is set up then there is no need for change anyway.

The fault is all yours though - you should have taught your girlfriend not to try clever stuff, like wiring stuff up. That's what blokes do. Get her to stick to girly things, like making a pie for the wiring hero. :)

Thanks

Good advice DIABLO. I thought I had her trained to leave the boy toys alone but I was wrong and paid for it. She was trying to do a good thing. She showed me how bad she felt if you know what I mean.

You didn't tell us what kind of bananas you are using.

If you are having to fold the wire over to get a good fit (which as pointed out won't matter 1 iota), it sounds to me like you are using pretty wimpy speaker wire ... what gauge is it?

Don't use the wimpy stuff if you are running longer distances to rear speakers ... upgrade your cable.

I am using 14 guage wire. My banana plug is designed to except wire up to 10 guage so this is why my 14 guage doesn't fit very tight unless I fold it over. I don't have a very long run so 14 guage is sufficient.

Thanks for all the input

at least she wasn't whining that the speakers were too big or that he spent too much money and she apparently did feel really bad.

I think he picked a winner and we should cut her some slack. ;)
