Friends, I’m in the process of finalizing the 5.1 home theatre system for my theatre room sized 19*14 feet with ceiling at 10 feet. The viewing distance is 14 feet. The local dealer here has suggested the following system
Marantz 5012
B & W 683 S2 main towers
HTM 61 S2 center
686 S2 for surround.
ASW610 sub.
Kindly guide me if this combination is ok or do I need to add/ substract anything lik ASW610 XP. The budget for the above system in India is around $ 5300. I’m totally new to this and this amount is quiet big for me to make any mistake. Plz help

Are you in the US / North America? I'd probably skip the B&W sub and get one from one of the trusted internet brands if so. I'd also say for towers, I'd step up to a higher model of receiver than the 5012.

Thanx for the reply Garcia. I’m in India so don’t have that much options to chose from at this price. Even I feel I need to upgrade the sub to 610 XP.( can get 2 610 sub for same price. Kindly advice which option is better). What AVR from Marantz would u suggest. 5012 is 100W/ channel and the next model 6012 is 110 W/ channel. Not much difference.

I'd say the advantage would be with the dual subs if you must stick with B&W, to give you smoother response through the room and that would also make up for the less powerful amp in the 610 vs 610xp. I wouldn't choose another avr for a 10W power difference which is indeed trivial, but rather any improvement on the feature set or connectivity that might matter to you.

Can you get a Denon AVR-X4300H or X4400H? Otherwise, you can get a Denon AVR-X3400H or Marantz SR6012 but add a 2 channel amplifier such as the Crownaudio XLS1502, to drive the 683 S2.

The B&W LCR option I would probably go another direction, but the biggest one I would do different is the sub.

Understanding you're in India...see if anyone has Monitor Audio...if so, the Silver series imo will perform as well or better than the B&W 600 series. Tannoy is another brand you should look into.

Martin Logan Motion 40...smaller brother of the Motion 60, but imo a better speaker.

Unfortunately I'm not sure what sub manufacturers you have access to, but it would be a shame to see you pay that for the B&W sub.

Thanx for the reply. All the access I have in India is to bose lifestyle 650, Klipsch , Polk,Jamo and B&W. They all similarly priced here for the mid segment.

Okay noted...there is a Klipsch speaker I like. I'm a B&W owner for 20 yrs now...loved my speakers. I've never liked the 600 series relative to their pricepoint...683s are not bad speakers by any means, but there is a large gap in performance from the 800 series.

The RP280 would perform in the same arena as the 683s for about $700 ea (US)....the RF7 would easily exceed the 683s for about the same cost.

Definitely don't get the Bose. :D

I think the other brands are about the same sound quality if they are the same price class.

The Klipsch will probably play the loudest.

But the B&W will have the best resale value and probably pride of ownership.

Jamo used to sell those THX Ultra-certified speakers. I would get that if they still have them in India.

For AVR, I would get the Denon counterpart since it is better value/price.

Call the SV Sound India dealer and find out if they carry the Ultra Series speakers and which subs are available there. If yes, they would be my one stop shop for the whole kit.
