B&W vs Revel, N = 1

So my wife's uncle came over to visit after dinner today. No, not the idiot one who wanted to grab and touch all my speakers. Thank god. This uncle is an audiophile like the rest of us. Total respect for the gears. He wanted to listen to the 802D2 and Salon2.

So we did a single subject, single-blinded informal study.

Speaker 1 = B&W
Speaker 2 = Revel

After going back and forth listening to some violin and piano classical pieces for 30 minutes, he concluded that speaker 1 were better. He said Speaker 2 sounded "warmer" to him, and speaker 1 sounded more neutral and more "dynamic".

I was a little surprised. Last Christmas, he told me my Salon2 were the best speakers he had ever heard, sounding extremely "dynamic" and "neutral". :D

What does this mean? Most likely absolutely insignificant. I'm thinking it's a case of "Any Given Sunday". Come this Thanksgiving, he would probably pick the Salon2 over the 802D2. :D

The 802D2 sound better in demos, IMO, because they have slightly hot high octaves. They sound more "alive". Unfortunately that sound is not realistic. It's, uh, Technicolor.

If you demo the 802D2 against the Orion I think you'll find the contrast even greater.

I will never ever understand why you don't take your incredible collection of speakers and position them for sound instead of merely symmetrical appearance. No meaningful comparison can ever be done with the way you have your speakers positioned. It's utter insanity, man!

Obviously your Salon2's simply don't have "it" anymore and must be gotten rid of. I'll PM you my address.

It was a difficult decision for the uncle to pick the winner as I expected. Any given day or mood. :D

Speakers are like a lot of things in life - grey and not as black-and-white as some people think. ;)

So no test between the 802D's and the Orions, maybe your uncle couldn't find them in the large long row of wood:D

He probably will one of these days. But, of course, the beauty of both the Salon2 and 802D2 stood out.

I agree with Irv. In a demo, the 802D2 will outshine the Orion IMO. The sound from the 802 just has more presence in the room. The Orion may be a little "laid" back or "warm" for the uncle. :D

One of these days.....I need to have a listen! :D
They are all in the same room with no acoustic panels or bass traps. So absolutely no meaningful comparison could be done anyway. ;)

But let me know if you want. :)
