Hey, I just got home and opened the box for my 685s and noticed that there wasn't a manual/warranty card just port plugs thats it. Is this normal or was I lucky enough to be sold demos that were reboxed?

They should come with a manual. Might want to look into it.

Also, within the packet with the manual are 8 self-adhesive rubber pads and 4 self-adhesive rubber stand-offs.

I bought a pair of brand new B$W 683's (floorstanders) and got manuals, warrantee cards, two sets of screw-on feet (spikes and rubber nubbies) and foam port plugs….oh yeah, and jumpers for the bi wire posts. Two sets of everything of course, two speakers=two boxes.

I think you should have received any/all of this too. If you did not, you might want to ask the shop where you bought them.

Having all the original material often helps preserve the resale value, so it might actually be worth something to have them even though you don’t “need” them. (But I may not be telling you anything new with this last point.)

Yeah when I looked at the electronic manual it said it should have came with rubber feet and a couple other things...nothing but the speakers and port plugs. I called the shop and the guy told me I just must have missed them in the box. Told him I checked like 15 times and he told me to look again.....

I really like my 683 floorstanders, but I am curious about monitors. Have you hooked them up? How do they sound? Were they by chance a move from floorstanders?

Yeah I hooked them up. For the most part I like them. When I picked them up I also listened to Studio 20s...and well those they aren't. Nice highs and mids, but a little lacking in the bass. For what its worth I like them better than RS1s I heard a couple weeks ago. I will say I wish I would have tried the Sierra 1s before getting these but once I get a sub I think I will be a lot happier.

I was gonna make another thread to ask this....I have 23" stands. The tweeter is about eye level +/- 1". When I stand up the bass doubles. I always thought the tweeter was supposed to be about eye level. Am I wrong or could it just be horrible acoustics in my room?

My last HT room had that problem with the bass. I would hear the deep lows that I was missing while sitting down. I never figured away of curing that. It drove me nuts!! :( I'm in a new place now and I don't have that problem.

Bottom line is that you got an open box item and you should demand a bigger discount or return them.

Interesting. I have actually been considering the 685s. I would like to check out the studio 20s, but there are no Paradigm dealers within reasonable driving distance, and no online dealers at all.:(
(I had a pair of DM603 S2s and really liked them. I got caught in the trap of thinking "If these are this good, how much better must the 705s be?", so I traded up. I ended up being disappointed, and ultimately sold the 705s.)
The Sierras also look interesting ($1086 ttl incl. stands, cables, and shipping.)

I would return the speakers to the dealer for another set. If you do not want to let go of those speakers because supplies may be short or other reasons, you can find sticky-back square rubber feet at Home Depot for a couple of bucks. You might also try the manufacturer for missing items.

having the tweeter at eye (ear) level is the commonly recommended starting place. You can play with toe-in to tweak imaging.

As far as the bass goes, sound frequencies do interesting things in rooms.

I once ran a test disc of various steady frequencies and was amazed as I walked around the room just how loud a tone could be in one spot, but when I moved my head just a few inches, the tone all but disappeared.

You might be able to tune your room by playing with speaker placement. This is certainly true when it comes to placing a subwoofer.

here's a link that refers to sub placement:

and another with interesting (to me at least) info on room acoustics.
