I hate to say it, but the presence "feature" is one of the dumbest ideas I think I've seen in a while. My buddy bought a Yammie some years ago because they had just come out with this. We set everything up and tried it out...the only WOW was "Wow, that doesn't really add much to the experience." Probably why Yamaha is the only one who does this (afaik).

So its not me not knowing how to set up my system. I am not alone in thinking presence speakers are not all there cracked up to be.

I appreciate your input Garcia.

Does anybody know how the presence speakers work in a Yamaha HT set up?
Which Yamaha receiver do you have? Only their flagship models such as the RX-Z1/Z9 will allow you to engage presense and back channels. it has to be a 9.1 receiver for it to work that way otherwise you will have back surrounds or presence, but not both. Such is the case with the Yamaha RX-V2400/2500, 2600,4600.

Gene,

I have the RX-V2095. It was the flagship model for Yamaha back in 2000 when I bought it. I am not really sure the presence speakers work. Sometimes I hear sound from them. I recently added the presence speakers. I never really got around to it until recently. They are supposed to add more depth.

Phil,

It (RX-V2095) has seven channels, 100 watts per channel into five of the channels, and 25 watts per channel into the effects channels (two channels that sit near the front left/right main channels).

Yes Buckeye fan, I realize that. I believe the issue according to Gene in an earlier post is do the presence speakers work simultaneously with rear surrounds or is it either or? The owners manual is not clear on that. Gene believes only certain Yamaha units allow both presence speakers to operate and rear surrounds to operate at the same time.

I think they are a year or 2 old. My buddy that has a Hi-Fi shop took them in on trade, and let me take them to get my impressions. From what you say the M22i is drastically different than the M3’s you had. That is interesting. The M2 and m3 are crossed over at 2.7, and 2.2, whereas the M22s are crossed over at 3.5kHz, perhaps that is why these little ones seem so bright.
Your buddy is none other than John "Joel Bernstein" ... A simple inquiry into Axiom with the Serial number could tell the date of the units you heard.

Axiom is odd in one particular way: they update and improve products without changing the model name.

Either or with all but the Z series units. Without having 9 channels of amplification, there is no way to run the rear (center) surrounds as in a 7.1 setup, as well as the two front presence speakers.

I am a little confused. The RX-V2095 is a 5.1 unit (It is circa 2000) that has two additional extra sets of speaker terminals for two front presence speakers. So the max number of speakers I can have in a 5.1 unit is 5 main speakers (two mains, center, 2 rear surrounds), 1 subwoofer, and I thought I could also have the two presence speakers. They are powered by a 25w amplifier as you stated in an earlier post. So if I understand it the presence and the rear surrounds can't run simultaneously even though there are dedicated terminals for presence speakers that have a 25w power rating.

Please clarify.

Your 5.1 system was a bit ahead of its time. It's almost a 7.1 system, except for the fact that it won't play matrixed rear "center" surround correctly.

Instead, it will add the 6th and 7th channel in the front and output a matrixed "presence" effect. I'm not sure if it's the same processing as on the newer Yamaha "presence" channels (Cinena DSP mode in your manual).

Yamaha states in their newer units "these [presence] effects include sounds that filmmakers intend to locate a little farther back behind the screen in order to create more theater-like ambiance."
