Axiom M2 or Logitech 5500 for Computer?

I'm in the middle of upgrading my computer and the first upgrade was a nice 24" wide screen LCD monitor (Replacing a 10 year old 17" CRT.) Next up is the audio.

In the past, I've generally preferred headphones over the crappy 2+1 cambridge soundworks speakers that I have connected. Is the Logitech 5500 enough better to make a difference, or would it still cause listening fatigue? The alternative would be to pick up a pair of "real" speakers such as the Axiom M2/M3 and a cheap receiver to power them.

Is it a complete no-contest between the Axiom and the Logitech 5500?

Can you actually use a regular pair of speakers with a computer?

What about heading down to your local musical instrument store and getting a pair of powered studio monitors? The KRK stuff is highly rated and affordable: http://www.krksys.com/index.asp

As far as computer speakers, I think the logitecs actually sound pretty darned good for what they are.

Computer speakers

Keep in mind that unpowered bookshelf speakers like the Axioms will require a receiver or amp to power them. Unpowered speakers would be a better option for expanding into a real 5.1 HT in the future. Also consider the Onix X-LS bookshelf speakers for $200/pair.

AH did a review of these powered speakers a while back that might be a good option without an amp or receiver:
