Axiom (because I can)

Unless the Axiom Epic 80.500's are really not to my liking I will get them. Just to have something different to play with.

1) Does anyone live in (or close to) Kitchener, Ontario that has the Epic 80.500's and is willing to let me audition these speakers in their home? I would like to see/listen to them at least once before trying the 30 day in home review. Shipping back 220lbs with insurance coverage is going to cost a bit.

2) Anyone that has these speakers...how do you have they connected? Receiver or amp? Can the Yamaha RX-V's handle 4 ohm loads?

My amps can handle 8, 4, and 2 ohm loads. I figure at 6 ohms I should have 225-250watts max available. Lots I think. Especially since I have less than that for my current 8 ohm speakers that can take a max of 500watts.

3) Hey...why do they say that larger speakers are more efficient? Because the typically have more drivers and can therefore produce more sound?

Thanks again.

If I were you I would phone Axiom and arrange a trip to Dwight to audition the Epic 80/500 system or whatever other products you want in their listening room. Dwight from Kitchener is about 300km mainly 401/400 so its not a difficult drive. They will be pleased to arrange it I'm sure and answer all your questions and needs. :)

I was thinking about doing that. I'll give it a try.

Someone mentioned that the axioms were harsh sounding. I hear that a lot for Klipsch speakers. I thought it was a characteristic of the loaded horn design. So, why would they say that about the axiom? Or is the harshness a factor of the speakers sensitivity? Both Klipsch and Axiom are very sensity speakers, 96 and 95 dB respectively.

They are not harsh in the least. They however are very unforgiving of poor production quality from the source material.

To some people, any speaker that isnt dull, warm and boring gets labeled as harsh:rolleyes:

Take what you read with a grain of salt because what one person labels as harsh, another calls nirvana.

Hashness

In Gladiator, when Maximus is taken into the forest to be killed (very early in the movie), he takes down one of the guards. He grabs the sword with his bare hands. Flips it around to grab the handle. Then slashes the guys face. That slash sound really kills my ears with my Klipsch speakers. I want to try that scene with the Axioms.

I'll be very interested to hear your thoughts on that scene played through the Axioms.

You should check out the Axiom boards. They have a list of people who are willing to demo their speakers for you. I am quite sure that there is someone in kitchener who has the M80's on that list.

Try sending him a PM on the Axiom boards instead. That worked for me.

They sound wonderful

I used the Axiom boards to find a person willing to share his Axiom system with me and I loved the experience. He was very nice and willing to let me play for hours. The speakers sounded flawless (he had the M60s, VP150, and QS8 surrounds) and not at all harsh. To my taste, they had the perfect amount of brightness, but no harshness.

This morning, I went to the Axiom webpage to browse around like I always do and noticed that all their model lines now show a "v2" at the end. For example, the M60Ti speakers are now M60Ti v2. Does anyone know what v2 means? Are they actually different then they used to be? If so, I might have to re-audition.

My first chance to help someone :D Here's a link to a brief overview from Amie at Axiom. From what I understand v2 is just a new tag for all the changes the have made over the past few years. From crossover tweaks to cosmetics. I remember reading in another post at the Axiom forum, anything since mid 1995 is a v2.

Thanks and welcome to the forum!!

In most cases harshness can be attributed to poor room acoustics combined with an uncalibrated setup. Ill informed folks inaccurately blame the speakers.

If I could just hurry up and save up I'd get them just for the heck of it. I mean...I cannot take it with you when you die, so I might as well have some fun with it....

General Question

If 8 ohms is easier, why make 6, 4, or 2 ohm speakers? Why not 16 ohm?

If I had two similar speakers, one 8 ohm and one 4 ohm, with the same sensitivity playing back at the same voltage (output level) would they be comparatively loud?

What are the advantages / disadvantages of going either way?

I can save 8% if I pick up the speakers myself. But it's an 8 to 9 hour round trip. And like my sig says....I still have a long way to go. Maybe I'll be set next year. Still wish I could see them without having to drive 4 hours, or bother with the 30 day in home trial. :(
