I tried connecting my AVR to my PC via HDMI and I unpluged the VGA from my monitor so the signal would go through HDMI but my computer is not displaying on my TV.

Maybe this would help by me giving a description how I have everything connected?

TV-->Yamaha AVR HDMI OUT
Sony Blu-ray player-->Yamaha AVR HDMI1
HD cable box-->Yamaha AVR HDMI2
PC-->Yamaha AVR HDMI3

Some times just restarting everything will do the trick. Is the HDMI on the mainboard or a 3rd party card?

If it's mainboard you may need to find out the default resolution of your TV, connect the computer to another display and adjust the resolution then back to the TV.

If you boot the computer does the BIOS POST (power on self test) show on the TV through the AVR and then you don't get anything?

What happens if you go computer direct to TV?

It is a 3rd party card in my PC.

No, nothing at all shows on my TV not even the BIOS POST.

I have not tried computer to TV directly.

What is the card? Does it work with a normal monitor?

I would say you are having HDCP handshake issues. Google this if you don't know wha HDCP handshake is.

What brand is your TV. The no name stuff can exhibit problems.

Also list the exact model #. See if there is a firmware update for both the TV and the Video card.

The card is HDMI only. For my monitor I have two options. One via VGA or second via DVI which I have not tried connecting monitor via DVI. I always connect via VGA.

And my TV is Insignia. The model is NS-40D510NA15.

What is the brand and make / model of the video card?

Get a DVI to HDMI adapter and give it a whirl.

I do not know the info for the video card.

And for the DVI to HDMI adapter, will this fix the issue so I could view my computer on my TV?

What I am wondering is if you have another display with HDMI that you could test the computer out on.

I am sorry but no. I have another monitor but it is VGA only. I have a 19" TV that I do not use anymore but that TV is a CRT, LOL. Unfortunately, I do not have any other displays with HDMI. The only displays are which I stated and both are old! LOL.

I think you are at a point we like to call stuck :)

Since you aren't seeing the POST I'm wondering if the Video Card is any good.

I looked in SIW under video but I do not know what I am looking for but I did a Google search on one of them which is NVIDIA GeForce 8400GS and the search shows it is a DVI/HDMI card.

OK, I found out what the problem was.

My computer was built for me by someone in my family.

There are two HDMI cards. One on the mainboard and one he put in himself.

The one on the mainboard is the one I was trying. The problem with that is he had turned it off in the BIOS so it does not interfer with the video cards.

The one that is active is the third party card.

Now here are some additional questions:

1.) With having this HDMI cable connected and on my monitor there are no icons on my desktop and no BIOS POST. I only see my desktop theme. If I unplug the HDMI cable and turn on the computer than everything is fine. How do I fix this?

2.) On my TV, the desktop does show but the resolution needs to be changed because the desktop is not fitting properly. How do I change this and what resolution should I change it too?

3.) With using the HDMI to view my computer on my monitor. Should I unplug the VGA from the monitor? Or leave it connected? If leave connected, should I use DVI or VGA for the monitor?

Easiest and most likely best is to make the HDMI you only connection. When you do that you will see your icons and other desktop items.

Glad it's working for you! :)

When you say make the HDMI my only connection, do you mean do not hookup my monitor via VGA or DVI?

And could you please answer my other questions?

Also, thank you so much for your help! :)

The point you will see is if you just do the one HDMI connection all the other things will resolve since you aren't running multiple displays and extending the desktop over those (hence the 'blank' screen but if you move your mouse far enough you will see it).

So when you have two monitors connected just think of it this way:

Windows perceives it as one longer or higher monitor depending on how you have them configured in the display control panel.

Just give it a shot.

I understand. But the question is unplug both power cord & VGA cable from the monitor itself? If not, than which should be unplugged?
