Currently running B&W 683 5.2 setup. (see below) I'll keep my question simple. Which would you all prefer if you were in my shoes?...

1. Onkyo 3007 & add an amp for my front 3 later?
or
2. Emotiva UMC-1 along with an Emotiva XPA-5?

Both options will run approx $1500. Im not super cooncerned with a lot of features, what i really want is to bring out the best sound in my B&Ws. I use my system for i'd guess 60% movies/40% music (2ch).

Let me know if i havent given enough info to get a respectable response.

I appreciate your help...always have!!

Trust me, if you're going to use a receiver as your preamp, don't get the one of the hotest running AVRs to do it. I'd take a long hard look at the Marantz receivers as they benchtest very well for their preamp sections and they aren't a stove either. Marantz receivers have a shallower chassis as well, under 16 inches. The Onkyo is closer to 19 inches deep.

That said, the Onkyo is a feature packed receiver that will likely satisfy your thirst for power without the aid of additional amplification. Having the TX-NR3007 juice your surrounds only is nothing to this receiver. The TX-NR3007 uses a triple darlington output stage which is one of the most robust forms of amplification that pretty much guarrantees A+ performance even with inefficient and tricky impedance curves of the most exotic speakers. To put it simply.... the 50 pound plus Onkyos are among the few receiver's I'd trust to handle full size electrostatic speakers. Short of the Yamaha RX-Z11, Denon AVR-5308CI, and maybe the top end NAD I wouldn't put much of anything else on ESLs

If you get the TX-NR3007 plan on adding some support cooling for peace of mind and better amplifier performance (cooler amp, less resistance, more power).

I don't have any experience with the Onkyo but I do have the UMC and XPA-5. I'll come right out and say the UMC still has some issues that need to be worked out. There is new firmware out today, so hopefully it will take care of most of the problems. If you have a relatively simple setup (5.x instead of 7.x), meaning mainly a DVD or Bluray player and CD player and use optical or coax for your cable connection, the UMC isn't a bad choice. I know there are a few cable providers that have equipment that doesn't always "play nice" with the UMC. I can tell you it does make a very good preamp for music. Just my opinion here, but the sound quality is in another league compared to the typical Yamaha, Pioneer ect. AVR's. I'd suggest waiting a week to see if the new firmware handles the remaining major issues. If it does, I think you would be very happy with the UMC/XPA combo. As it is now, the sound quality makes me willing to put up with a couple minor glitches.
