AVR HDMI audio issues

Hey guys,

I've had the same problem w/ my last two receivers. The first being a Denon 1909 and now w/ the Onkyo tx-sr707 which i've switched to for the preout availability.

I have an Oppo BDP 83 (HDMI 1), Direct TV (HDMI3), Xbox 360/HDDVD (HDMI4), HDMI 2 is not being used. I've gone through the setup menues and the inputs are all correctly assigned and priority is given to Lossless/PCM/lossy codecs when available.

The problem is this: The only input that will give my DDTrueHD, DTSMaster, Multi PCM, or any of the legacy/lossy codecs is HDMI 1 w/ the oppo. I had the same problem w/ the denon 1909. I bypassed this issue w/ the 360 by running HDMI straight into the TV and a seperate optical digital cable into the AVR, which will give me a Dolby Digital signal. However, the point of HDMI is to reduce the number of cables isnt it?

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to fix this issue w/o using an optical cable?

Thanks,

Joe

So the other HDMI inputs don't have audio at all? Only the Oppo is outputting audio if I'm understanding you...

The other HDMI inputs are outputting prologic, neo, all channel stereo, stereo, direct etc... so yes, there is sound but the receiver isnt recognizing the lossless and DD/DTS codecs via these inputs.

My best guess-when you are getting the audio from these other sources, it sounds like you are applying different dsp's to them. For example-my 2807 can only get Multi channel PCM from my PS3. I can set the 2807 to output in stereo, all chan, direct, pure direct, pro logic, etc. "Direct" still gives me 5.1 surround though and it's still LPCM (multichannel). Do you still get surround sound in "Direct" mode? That's where I'd leave it set at. These other devices probably can't bitstream DD/DTS, etc (except the Oppo) and so all are sending LPCM to which you are applying different dsp's. That's my guess.

Thats an idea, i'll try the Direct setting when i get home and give it a chance. The biggest head scratcher for me is why there arent any issues via the optical. Thanks.
