AVR 4802R fault

<font color='#000000'>I discovered a fault in my new AVR-4802R receiver. The AVR will enter Pure Direct Mode (PDM) only if the rear center surround is set to a selection other than ‘none’.

If you have a 4802R and notice the Pure Direct LED does not illuminate when you select PDM try setting your rear center speaker to small (Both A and B speakers set to small). You'll see the LED light up.

If you’re asking “when you select PDM, why does the microprocessor even care about surround speakers” your dead on target: it should not care in the slightest.

According to Ben at Denon service in Los Angles, enabling the rear center speaker will not damage the AVR even if you have no rear center speaker plugged into the AVR.

I’m working with (trying to) Denon service to solve this issue. This will be my first test of a few items:

1) If Denon will field a microprocessor firmware upgrade to correct the fault.
2) The follow through of the Denon service center in LA.
3) If the RS-232 port allows for upgrades to the AVR firmware.

So far I’m not terribly impressed with the communication of the Denon service center in LA. I’ve contacted them twice and my Dealer was involved for over a week, I’m having to repeatable ask for the status of this issue. I think they are trying to see if I’ll forget about the problem.

I purchased a 4802R back in December 2003. Everything seemed to work just fine until I redid the speaker setup and checked "none" for the rear surround speakers. Like you I "misplaced" the Pure Direct Mode LED.

I called Denon twice. Both times I was told that this was normal and this was the set is designed to work. (uh huh....) I also emailed them twice. Here was their reply - Dear Dennis,
Please see page 50 in your owner's manual "NOTES:" on setting up the PURE DIRECT. Call us if you need additional help."

I did change the speaker setting back to small and guess what, the LED now works.

I plan to double check with Denon Tech. Support to double check to see if:
1. Will this harm the unit. (I don't see how it could but I would like their reply in writing in case there is a problem down the line.)
2. I will also start pushing to see if they are going to try and fix this or not.

I have had several receivers throught the past years and I do really feel this is the best I have had.

One other thing - have you noticed that IF you have the rear surround speakers turned off AND you play a Dobly EX DVD that the rear speaker LED comes on anyway? Bet it's the same issue!
