AVR 247 video processing looks...bad..

Let me start by saying I'm no audio/videophile, up until now I've been using a $200 sony piece of garbage reciver with an old CRT TV.

I recently just purchased an HK AVR 247, and a BenQ W500 LCD projector. Upon viewing sources with HDMI, everything looked great. Plugging any source into the projector resulting in a great picture, whether from composite or component. In the permanent installation, however, I planned on using the Faroudja video processor in the HK to upscale everything to HDMI so I could use just a single cable in that long run. Upon doing this, the picture looks...terrible... over composite or component into the reciever. I know the HQV in the projector is supposed to be better than the Faroudja in the reciever, but the difference is night and day. Using the HQV scaler results in the picture looking just as it should, using the Faroudja results in fuzzy lines coming down the screen, "static" like noise in the picture, and just generally looks bad.

Is there any way I can correct this or any setting I can change, or is the Faroudja just that bad? I'm a noob when it comes to AV, but I thought that was a fairly decent scaler? What if I run component to the projector as well and let the HQV digitize it?

Welcome to the forum, Cheetah! I can't answer your question, but I wanted to bump this to hopefully get some attention.

Can anyone answer this? Thanks!

since the projector does a good job, dont apply any processing to the signal, just pass it.

Agreed, set the receiver to pass-thru HDMI without video processing. Of course leave the audio processing enabled to get the high res audio from your Blu-ray discs.

The W500 has one of the best processors on the planet, why on earth would you let that shitty Faroudja scaler touch the video signal?

Set the 247 at 1080i and send it to the projector.

No, that would be scaling. And that's disregarding the fact the 247 only goes up to 720p.

Unfortunately, I can't find a way to disable the processor:confused:

Does this mean I have to run separate lines for composite, svideo, and component? I seem to get a better picture if I set the HK to 480p, but it's still not nearly as good as directly into the projector...

As an update, I finally gave up on the HDMI and bought a component cable and ran that instead, just setting the video mode on the reciever to whatever the source is so the reciever doesn't process anything.

I thought the Faroudja chip was supposed to be decent, guess I was wrong. The HQV scaler on the projector makes everything look 100x better:eek:

just remember a c-class mercedes doesnt perform like an s-class, although they are both mercedes. Faroudja makes a wide range a processors.

glad its working for ya...

There we have it, the ol' thinking instead of researching. Any forum not owned by Faroudja will tell you those video processors are bad news.
Research, Research, Research!
I know when you decide to get new gear it's easy to jump the gun, but that's a quick way to disappointment. And it's not like it's hard to trawl the net for an hour to find this stuff out.

Maybe wireless HDMI?:)

ok, research...not all of their processors are bad news;) , heck the same processsor in 2 different avrs will perform differently often. The one problem i see over and over is the thinking that a video processor in a low-mid level avr is going to do wonders for ones pq, if you have a capable display, more than likely the processor it uses will do a better job.

For starters Seth=L your wrong because the 247 does go to 1080i because I have one myself!!!
