Avia and or DVE necessary?

What exactly does avia, or DVE have that one needs to set up a home theatre? I just ran the THX optimizer combined with the test tones on my receiver....is there something that i am missing? Thanks for the help!!!

I have the DVE disc. Still can't figure it out. I guess I need an SPL meter but then I wouldn't know how to use that either.

I have the AVIA disk now, courtesy of Netflix. So far, everything that I have watched with respect to HT setup and such I had already learned from this site. I still have to watch the video calibration section, but I have a feeling it will be more useful once I get a projector.

My receiver also has a built in calibration setup and so far, it sounds great. I plan on using an SPL meter as well to see how close the automatic calibration fared.

I do have an spl meter as well, just wondering if avia or DVE would help me at all with PQ or audio setup.

AVIA or DVE are very useful for calibrating your tv. I have both and prefer DVE for the video calibration. AVIA is better overall if you only want to pick one or the other. The audio tests of both can be useful too, but aren't necessary to set the levels and balance all the channels - you can use the receiver's internal test tones for that.

An SPL meter is a must for calibrating levels. It is not hard to learn how to use one. You can always ask questions here if there is anything that you find confusing.
