If you're interested in Ascend you could do the re-certified 340SEs, from Sierra trade ins, across the front and 200s in the back and keep your $1K budget.

Yes, I agree. The Ascends are a step up from the x-series or svs-scs speakers, but i can understand budget constraints. I think you'll enjoy any of those speakers.

You could check out the Polks that were in the 2007 speaker faceoff. They did the best in the low budget class, beating out the x-ls speakers. You could get 3 pairs of them in your price range.

Hmm...I've been looking intently at getting the AV123 x-ls speakers for some time now (just don't want to put money on something I have to wait for, thus haven't ordered yet) but this review has me thinking...based on my listening preferences (described in my signature) I would probably be happier with those polks they reviewed, wouldn't I?

That is, those polks combined with a good sub/bass shaker combo. Circuit city has them for $179 too, almost $100 cheaper than I would pay for the X-ls after shipping. Just a matter of figuring out which center speaker to add to that for a starting 3.1 setup.
