I am looking for a receiver to fit in an entertainment center with a lift. The receiver we currently have is a Yamaha RX-V630. The depth can be no larger than 12". Or I can fit an AV with more depth but not as much height. I want to purchase an AV for my husband for Christmas but I want to get one that is of same or better quality as his Yamaha.

Less than 12" depth will be tough to achieve. Even the RX-V630 that you currently have is 15 3/8" deep. Most receivers today have depth 17" - 19". What exactly is this "lift" that you are refering to? Maybe you need to change it so that you can accomodate a deeper receiver.

I wouldn't recommend buring any component based on its dimensions. I doubt that you will find anything that is only 12 inches deep. As you get higher power levels, there is the basic physics of heat dissapation that will require a certain amount of space and ventilation. Only lower powered components will be very compact, and they probably will not give very good performance.

Some of the receivers that use digital amplification instead of traditional analog amplification are very compact and may meet the depth requirement. Panasonic digital receivers have gotten a lot of praise and Onkyo has one or two models as well.

They aren't usually available at the big box stores like Best Buy and Circuit City but they can be found at online retailers or specialty audio shops.

This lift is in the back of this poorly designed entertainment cabinet that lifts the LCD flat TV. It is a beautiful, expensive cabinet that we ordered through our decorator and it was to accommodate our audio, video equipment. We have to keep our AV outside of the cabinet now with wires showing since I can't find a smaller depth AV with same sound quality. That was bad enough but now I can't raise and lower the TV that is on the lift without some of the monster cables being pulled out of the TV jacks. The reason to lower TV is so one can see a beautiful piece of furniture with music coming out of it and an painting behind it. A decorating aspect. Sorry about the forum etiquette, I'm new to this. I'm trying to solve this by putting an AV in the small depth cabinet or leaving it out to the side but at least being able to use the lift without it pulling the cables out.

Besides using the lcd to display paintings e.g slideshow style (means lcd will be turned on a lot:eek: ) you might have to factor in a decent carpenter to re-work some internals on the cabinet. I know it is an extra expense but you cannot beat having a set-up that just WORKS. I know it bugs me when my missus does something hodge-podge and carrries on like it is totally ok ( my projector is currently on the coffee table because she doesn't want too many holes in the ceiling. GRRRR, but I'm working on it in a diabolically sneaky yet suprisingly up-front way);)

Video display strategy

Tonya,
If you want a video display that gets out of the way, consider this strategy:

Keep the expensive A/V cabinet and don't use the lift feature. This should solve your space and cable issues. Sell your current display or move it to another room. Buy a 720P front projector like the Optoma HD70 ($1k) and a motorized screen that will drop down out of the ceiling.

The only catch is that this type of system is you need to have good light control in the room for front projection.

Move cabinet to another room

I would move it to another room but entertainment cabinet with lift was (12k) That's why I want to use it the way it was designed. The stupid lift alone was (3k). The idea of this cabinet was to be able to lower TV and no one know that there was a TV in the room. Play the music or not have music playing. Just a beautiful piece of furniture with a Painting that shows behind the TV when the TV goes down into the cabinet. An expensive decorator thing. I personally don't mind my TV showing in the room but my husband is kind of a snob.

Lift

Sounds like the high end furniture is not very functional.
If you could keep the cabinet and return the $3k lift, you could afford a front projector and screen. Use the current set for a "secondary" HT in the bedroom, etc.

Tonya that sure is not a lot of room there. Have you considered looking at some of the digital receivers such as the Panasonic XR57 or the XR59??? The Panny's are quite small in comparison but I am not too sure about the depth. You may want to go take a closer look. Good luck in your hunting.
