AV Receiver advice for a total newbie

Hello,

Just registered, but have been lurking around for the past few weeks... I'm setting up a very basic home theater system, and was considering either a Marantz 4002 or a NAD T744 for my receiver. Could you please provide some feedback?

I have already decided on the speakers -- already have them: Boston Acoustics MCS 130 set.

The system will be used not very frequently by my wife and kids to watch movies, but most frequently by myself to listen to music (regular CDs, SACD, DVD Audio).

Thanks for your comments and suggestions.

Of those two I would choose the Marantz. You could throw in the Yamaha RX-V663 and Pioneer VSX-1018 into the consideration.

Thanks for your comments. Why would the Marantz be a better choice?

Thanks!

NAD makes a fine product, but it typically lacks in features. If you don't need modern features, NAD is an excellent choice. I wouldn't overlook the Yamaha 663, Onkyo 606, or Pioneer 1018 as they're excellent products as well.

Thanks. Unfortunately, in this country I'm restricted to those 2 choices only. I'm more concerned with sound quality for music, as well as the availability of processing modes.

Gotcha... Good news is that these two are both good choices. I'm guessing the NAD will have higher output despite it's lower ratings, but I'd still have to lean towards the Marantz. It has more features, connectivity, and an excellent amp section. Should be plenty of power for those speakers. Any way to try them both out?

1018 or 863?

What about yahama rx-v863 and pioneer vsx-1018AHK. Anybody can offer their opinion on which is better and why?

I am also being recommended AAD M Series 5.1 speaker set comprising M-5T, M-5C, M-10S, M-5X. Anybody has any experience with these?

Thanks in advance! :)
