AV Connection Help!

I am in the process of installing a new home surround sound system, but am having trouble with choosing the correct type of cables to use for best performance. I am using a component cable to connect my HDTV cable box into the receiver, then a component cable into the TV. I have tried to use a Toslink cable to connect from the cable box into the receiver but I never get any sound. Do I need to use more than 1 Toslink cable? I thought of trying to use the digital coax connection, but not sure if I need one or two cables for this either (I even noticed that my Sony TV has a Toslink connection in back). If anyone could lend a suggestion on which is better, or how to go about connecting all these things together, would be greatly appreciated. Right now I have spent a lot of money for something that is just sitting here.

System Details:
Receiver: Denon 2805
Front Speakers: Mythos One’s
Rear Speakers (in ceiling) Definitive Technology 83/A
Side Speakers: Mythos Two’s

you should not have to use more than one Toslink cable from the cable box to the receiver. check to make sure the input source is correct on the receiver

I have a Yamaha receiver, but on mine I have to set the input to "Auto" or "Digital" to get sound with my TOSLINK cable from my DVD player. There is also a "Analog" setting for standard RCA patch cables. If your receiver is set to analog (or something to that effect on the Denon) you won't get sound with a TOSLINK or Digital Coax. And, you only need one TOSLINK or Digital Coax for each component.
