Audiosource Amp One/A ??

Is anyone familiar with this? I am looking for an amp to use in the other room from my zone 2. Currently I've been running the speakers off of my A/B switch, but my speakers are all 4ohms. So I'm paranoid about accidentally leaving A&B on instead of one or the other and overheating my reciever (denon2805). I've heard people recommend the amp100 but have could not find any info on the amp1a.

Ubid has an Amp100 for $54 with $14 sh. or a Amp 1a for $65 w/ $15 sh. The amp100 is 50w x2 @8ohms, the amp1a is 80w x2 @8ohms and has individual level controls (does that affect  volume or power? ). Both claim to be stable to 2ohms. I'd like to get the more powerful one, but reallywant to get the one with more quality/sound/dependability.

Edit: added links AMP100 AMP1A

Which is better for me? Do I need the extra wattage? What is recommended?

• Maximum 8 ohm stereo output power at 1% THD+N: 60W
• Maximum 4 ohm stereo output power at 1% THD+N: 75W
• Maximum 8 ohm Bridged-Mono output at 1% THD+N: 160W
• Input needed to reach full output: 1.4v

Neither amp is a power house but they are inexpensive:)

They would drive your zone two at a lower level if your expectation is for background music, nothing loud. For that kind of work, it would be fine.

They might surprise you :) I just sold a special One/A to Ron Temple and I had used it for a while in my bedroom setup. When I was running it, I let it run for a few hours solid and it didn't even begin to warm up. The sound is clean and detailed and it is 2 Ohm stable. For the size and price they are great amps. I'd go with the One/A. With the volume controls, you can actually use it like an integrated amp, which is what I did when my PM7000 had a problem.

Nice speakers!! Those amps are nice little units. Your speakers and ears will appreciate the additional power of the Amp 1/A.

Thanks. I think I'm going to go with the Amp 1/A.

Quick question, is it better to place the amp closer to the reciever or closer to the speakers? I would think it would be the speakers, but I've never owned a separate amp before.

I doubt it would may any difference to the sound where you put it. It would be cheaper (speaker wires are cheap) and probably more convenient to keep it close the the reciever.

Pulled the trigger...

I just ordered the Amp 1/A from Ubid. Total cost with shipping was $79.82. I can live with that price.

Thanks for the help guys.

Not trying to knock on the amp (especially considering price) but it's always been my experience that amps that can double thier output or come close when going from 8 to 4 or 4 to 2 represent better quality. Can anyone enlighten me on this one?

'Doubling Down' is the theoretical ideal but in practice it can't be achieved at a reasonable cost and size. The high end and rather expensive amps come close but what they do is de-rate the 8 ohm rating so that it appears to double down into 4 ohms. In other words, if the amp is capable of 250 wpc at 8 ohms and 400 wpc at 4 ohms, they rate it as 200 wpc into 8 ohms.

Don't put too much stock into whether the specs appear to double down. An amp that claims it does isn't necessarily superior to one that doesn't.

The key factor, as noted by MDS, is good amps are more likely to double output or come close :) It's a good way to get an idea of how solid an amp is, but it shouldn't be used necessarily as a primary factor for shopping for an amp. Let me tell you, for it's size, the transformer is pretty big and the package as whole is pretty heavy. It's not a powerhouse so won't generate insane SPLs, but for zone 2 it should be perfect.

Got it today...

...that was fast, real fast. I just ordered it Friday evening and it showed up at noon today.

Anyway, it sounds better than when I was running directly off the reciever's A/B switch. I let it run pretty loud for around two hours and the amp barely generated any heat at all. For reference, the speakers are old 4 ohm Aiwa somethings and are being used in a relatively small area.

I'm pretty happy with the amp and the price.

That's great, now to get rid of that crappy sub!! LOL! :D
:D

Actually, I ordered a M&K VX860 sub about a week ago. I'm hoping it'll show up before Xmas. Then I'll put the crappy one in my bedroom.
