I wish I could give you some referrals... but I haven't purchased a CD in - darn near 10 years.

I am a fan of FLAC rips... there are great programs out there that will convert FLAC to MP3 320 if you want to stream over a network device or upload to a portable media player.

The FLAC rip itself is one of the most pristine ripping methods used today... it sounds absolutely amazing! :)

Sound wise, I'd recommend U2's "No Line on the Horizon". It's hard to find a rock album that isn't compressed, distorted, recorded at too high a level, but this one is pretty good. I'm only mildly enthusiastic on the music, but sound-wise, it's pretty good, with clean sound, careful production and good staging. There isn't much dynamic range, but it doesn't do much that's real bad.
