Damn dude, I thought I went nuts on my dorm system. One of your mains cost more than my whole system

How exactly did you afford those beasts?

Did you know that it is proven fact that people can be made to fall asleep/be hypnotized with constant 22 cycles per second visual input?! It would give a whole new meaning to 'deep' sleep if it works with our auditory systems.

For most people, yes. they tend to find a new hobby and lose intrest.
Or in my case, several new and mucho more expensive hobbies, including marriage/divorce, airplane ownership/racing, waterskiing, sport cars :).

Recently wandered back into the endless quest for perfection, with a much smaller tolerance for over paying. At least in this hobby, I can think the changes did something :)

Got the 50" Plasma yesterday. Wow. Guess this is it for me (for a few months, anyhow.) Spent about 10 large in the last couple of months, and hafta admit, it looks and sounds pretty good. Not perfect, mind you, but it does have me saying it's time to settle down and just enjoy.

Due to missing the date on this I thought Clint had written an article that caused a few not so active members to resurface.

Probably the silliest thing I have ever done in the quest for better audio is to unplug my water cooler in the next room while trying to identify the source of a barely audible noise coming from a speaker.

Audio Nirvana for me would be to know way more and be in a position to apply it in the DIY arena. Having spare equipment to toy with would be pretty cool too.

nearing the Assymptotic Limit

Is there ever an end to Audioholism? What do you do with an Audioholic who tries to quit? Can you really build a motion simulator chair that will make you puke? All these questions and more are address in our latest editorial that addresses the complex and perpetual issue of audioholism (often confused with its less-infectious cousin "upgradeitis"). Don't miss it!

As an ole programmer, it is never done but it is close to 95% complete. Just when you think you have reached the level of diminishing returns technology changes and new function and features are available.

In 1970 when I purchased a 13" analog Maganov color TV with rabbit ears for $300 on a payment plan, I thought that was the best you could ever get

When I built a Dynaco FM-5 tuner to go with a Marantz 1060 and a pair of Bose 901s with the waterbed couch in the living room covered with black velvet and the long red shag carpet in my townhouse. I though nothing could be better.

When I got my first Amiga computer that had a 8 color monitor and could actually do multiprocessing and had voice and music synthesizing for $2000 in 1985. I thought nothing could be better.

When I got my first VHS recorder in 1991 for $500 I thought nothing could be better.

When I got a Pioneer Elite TSX-45V and Misubishi 55" HD Tv in 2003 and Def Tech 2006 speakers ,Def Tech pro center 100 and Def Tech Pro Sub 100 and four bipole celing surrounds. I thought nothing could be better.

When I got a 37" Vizio in 2006 I though nothing could be better.

When I got my Def Tech 7002, CLR300, SVS PB12-Plus and Marantz SR8002 in 2008 I thought nothing could be better.

Now where in my 60" plasma in 2009? :D

I may not be there , But My wife says I better be darn close :D She said don't think anymore, there is nothing better ...or else!

I am nearing the asymptotic limit! I would still like to get an HK car upgrade with twin turbos or a nice 4.0 V8 in a 3 sedan.

Take Care!

I am an Audioholic (constantly tweaking, upgrading and adjusting.) My GF is not one. I could put together a system costing thousands upon thousands and tweaked to the nth power or turn on a boombox and my GF would swear there is no difference between the two.

The one thing I have taught her is that Monster and Bose suck arse. Hey baby steps you know, baby steps.

lol that's crazy, but not applicable in our case.

I figure I will just stash some cash every month. Tell her it's my version of books. (she loves books). I love A/V equipment. Nice thing is my next theater investment is her area of fun. Furniture. I figure if I let her have anything she wants then I can get away with more.

no audioholicism wil never end...
While there are top end amps/recievers/coil amps, High quality speakers, SACD decks and a big F**K off subs still being produced, i will always be upgrading. so my audioholicism will never stop. love my crystal clear systems too much

I have spent a respectable $6,000 so far, but I am far from finished. Going to upgrade the present setup with better cabling and interconnects and power cables this year. Will probably add a dedicated SACD player and a 2-channel amp to drive the fronts.

I am also breaking out the 2-channel portion of the setup for a seperate rig. I am currently on a quest for a new Turntable and have my eyes set on a VPI Aries 3. The TT is my primary focus this year...the whole process will take another 2-3 after that.

And then....I can start all over again!

That is a good idea. I had a good system when I got married, and my wife liked it much better than the boombox she had. So she could see and hear first hand that a good system has some value.

I have added a surround system, which at first she was not convinced was necessary, but I let her pick out the first new movie to play on it, and she liked it.

I NEVER lie to my wife about upgrades or such things. I don't want that kind of relationship.

I now own several thousand dollars worth of equipment, and have no plans on upgrading anything soon, or some of it ever. Of course, with new formats, there will be additions, but that is not the same as replacing what I already have. When the TV dies, I will probably get something bigger (I always do when I buy a new TV, which I always use for several years before a new set is purchased), but I don't plan on buying another TV until one I have dies (a natural death, not one induced by me as an excuse to get a new one).

Basically, I am satisfied with my system. You see, I actually like some music and movies, not just equipment for the sake of having interesting equipment.
