Audioholism - Is There Ever an End?

Is there ever an end to Audioholism? What do you do with an Audioholic who tries to quit? Can you really build a motion simulator chair that will make you puke? All these questions and more are address in our latest editorial that addresses the complex and perpetual issue of audioholism (often confused with its less-infectious cousin "upgradeitis"). Don't miss it!

LOL. Definitely fiction, because we all know NO audioholic would ever say "It's perfect." :D That's more like The Twilight Zone...

So what exactly is the definition of an Audioholic? The constant tweeker? The constant upgrader?

Love the avatar! An Audioholic is... is.... um. Well, we're never satisfied and the upgrades are necessary because technology is always changing - so you can never truly be "there". :)

agreed.

this is how you can tell your an audioholic

Give 2 people the same system (everything, tv speakers etc.) and the same room.

Obviously they have to know how to set it up.

An audioholic will always finish last. They will set it up a ho-gillion times. They will put the subwoofer in one spot, listen, and change it. Change the toe in of the speakers a billion times. Make sure everything is perfectly square with each other. Change the hight and width of the surrounds a billion times.

Its hard to notice an audioholic, but its not hard to tell if you are. :)

Note: All examples above are from "first hand experience" :)

For most people, yes. they tend to find a new hobby and lose intrest.

What do you do with an Audioholic who tries to quit?
Offer to buy his stuff for pennies on the dollar.

Can you really build a motion simulator chair that will make you puke?

In my case, my Audioholism made me lie for like a thousand times. I've bought some new amps and almost bury them to make my wife believe that they're used and that i pay like two cents for them.

Once i had to disguise a second-subwoofer like a side-table and put a tablecolth on it until my wife discovered it. She asked me, "Marco Antonio, what is this?"

mmmmm...... a subwoofer?

I just ordered a Denon DVD-2910 on the internet at 5:00 AM. Gotta think of a line to tell SWMBO before UPS delivers this thing. Heckuva deal

.

If you have a UPS pickup center near by, call UPS and have them deliver it their. Then pick it up with the wifey is out, get it home and install before she knows. As long as its the same color as unit its replacing she'll never know. :D

As far as the original question, I'm an addict and I need help  Just picked up a Denon 4806, and haven't told the wife the cost.

It's not the same color...I'm replacing a cheapie JVC changer. I was able to make it malfunction to demonstrate that a replacement was needed, so she's OK with the new one. However, I told her the 2910 was $125. Gawd, men are pigs....just too damn bad we own everything

My Fellow Audioholic Brethren,

I've done all the things mentioned by you in this thread. I am shameless. I once hid a receiver for 2 months from my wife. I even used her hearing disability to convince her that we needed a new speaker system to help her hear movie dialog better. I never stop tweeking, lusting, researching, replacing, or upgrading. I'm now divorced, but not lonely. My mistress (the system) keeps me busy and sleepless. But I must admit that lately, I do miss having a real woman around. But finding one who thinks being married to an audioholic is cool seems unrealistic and hopeless.

I was actually 90% content for a few months once. I've never been 100% content, but I pray for that. As a religious person, I don't want God to strike me dead (check out #1 of the 10 commandments). I keep telling myself that, "My system is not my God! My system is not my God!" But who am I fooling. I ask myself, "why do I not have a Lexus, or a boat or a vacation home in Hawaii, or even an updated kitchen?" Because of my drug of choice. Sight and Sound gear. I'm doomed. Pray for me people, I need it.

Can I get an "Amen"!!! :(

Amen brother! I'm a poor college student and I dumped >$1k into my system. Of course it won't be updated for awhile...*

*Oh who am I kidding, as soon as I have some spare cash it's getting something new :(

praying won't help, as it doesn't do anything, but, you can poke your eyes out and jam long sharp things in your ears so you can no longer enjoy HT, then sell it all off. Might wanna loose your sence of touch aswell, cause of subwoofers......

Tweaking Is Forever!

Personally, sometimes just sheer boredom will lead me to try different things. There have been times when I felt that everything was working pretty damn good. Then, I read or re-read some article about this or that tweak and try it, even if it's something I have done before. You never know, it might work better with the improvements made since the last try.

Then there are the things you never expected to make a difference. One such is using a digital delay. What's the big deal about that, you ask? Everybody is familiar with using delay to sync up the sound waves from various speakers in the room, whether it be multi-speaker home theatre or just timing a subwoofer to a regular 2 channel system.

Many years ago, I went to a music supply store (guitars, amps and such) and purchased an outboard delay unit for about $400. My aim then was use it to compliment a Fosgate Audionics Model 2 surround processor, particularly the stereo surround modes, a Fosgate specialty. This processor had delay for the mono surround modes, but not for the stereo modes. Fosgate would add that feature into his later units.

Moving forward in time, I grew tired of trying to get several different speakers and amps to sound integrated. My budget wouldn't allow for totally matched components. This led me to abandon multi-channel to return to regular stereo. I currently have a pair of Magnaplanar Q/R1.6s and a single Martin-Logan Depth subwoofer. As the Maggies are about 7 feet closer to me than the sub, which I have in the front left corner of my room, I decided to bring the delay unit out of retirement. I hooked it up to the Maggies and dialed in 7 milliseconds of delay and proceeded to the listening tests.

Well, one day I was listening to this and that and dialing in different delay times and noting the changes I heard. When I stopped for the night, I noticed that I had not even turned the sub on! Yet, I still heard differences in the sound quality. I find this absolutely fascinating and have no idea why this should be.

Since this intial find, I have changed my set-up a little bit. As it was, the delay was only to the Maggies, with the sub off on its own. I have rewired the sub to be in on the delay also by hooking it up to the speaker inputs of the Maggies. This is similar to a recommendation I have read about that is endorsed by REL and Vandersteen for their subs.

Truly, tweaking is FOREVER!

No this obssessive hobby never ends.... Good example click on the link below. That is my system in my college dorm room last year, i barely got everything to fit in my room, and to think the only thing left from that system are the speakers, cdplayer, and dvdplayer. Everything else has been upgraded...
