Hello Audioholics,

I’d like to upgrade my home theater! The first time around I did not research many brands and may have limited my options. It’s been a few years since I’ve upgraded my speakers so I’d like to “do it right” this time.

Current Equipment:
Aperion Audio 6T and 5C front stage. 4B Heights and Rears. No sub.
Denon 2312ci, WDTV/PS3 as Media Source.

Room:
12x20, but biased to one side with high ceilings (See screenshot below)

Apartment Woes:
1) Subwoofer – My apartment manager received complaints when I used a sub a 8” ported subwoofer (isolated on a subdude). The wall on the east is practically “part” of my neighbor’s apartment. As a result I have to use Dyn Vol “Evening or Day” when watching movies.
2) We have old wood floors also resonate easily. As a result of I plan on moving in November to a private home (or a ‘new’ apartment on the first floor). The ultimate goal there is to get a sub.
3) The walls on the north and south are plain. The wall on the west is "decorated". It has two curtains, a huge picture frame, and a diploma. The wall on the east is plain. It a very large fishtank (180GAL) which will be sold soon (in prep for the move).

Upgrade Plan:

I’m very happy with Aperion Audio as a company and the setup’s performance despite having no subwoofer. Please see below for my reasons for upgrading.

My goals are to eventually have a bigger sound stage, but one that is more refined. Vocal clarity is pretty important for obvious reasons. When I play movies at near ref, my center sounds a bit harsh (maybe not the right word), where the tweeters kind of hurt my ear a bit. I don’t know I this effect is caused by the speaker’s specs, room acoustics, or if the lack of subwoofer to “balance” the system.

I would like to get towers for eventual music duties in the future. The current towers run as “FULL” and have ample bass for the apartment (although not audiophile quality). The 6T’s are front ported which probably helps with that “effect”. Audyssey MultiEQ XT lowers peaks below 80hz on the 6T's, perhaps my room is affecting the output. If I buy a subwoofer now I won’t be able to enjoy it so might as well leave it out of the equation.

I’d like to add basic room treatments to improve clarity and don’t really care about the surrounds right now.

Listening Habits:

90% Movies, 10% Music (Hip-Hop, Rock). The reason I don’t listen to much music on the system is because my headphones/pc allow me to play louder. I purchased towers in hopes of enjoying music some day.

Budget: Around 3k for a new front setup? I although this isn't a hard limit. I'm willing to span this out over time if necessary.

With the details above in mind - What would you recommend? I’m thinking “big” and “future”. Thank you all for your time!

I think I'd wait for the move and see what size room that you wind up in. What I would try for now is moving the sofa out about a foot or two more to see if you're being overwhelmed with reflections off that back wall.

Thanks. There are many number of moving pieces at the moment. I have someone interested in my front setup so no better time to get started. I'm planning on adding the sub and larger rear speakers down the road to accommodate for the bigger room. I dont expect the new room to be that much bigger though (possibly more "square" than rectangle")...

Currently the front tower is 21" into the room (placed 1" from the wall). If the Phil's require 4' then that may be too large for the current situation.

I tried getting subjective/objective feedback/reviews on the Philharmonic1 and 2's but it's been difficult. The website lists specs and no information on the center. I'm currently reading various threads but they are very lengthy!

Keep in mind that I'm asking AcuDefTechGuy. I don't know for sure that they'd eat up your 1/4 of your room but I suspect they might. On the other hand if I had the money and the room the Phil 2s would temp me to but like you I don't have the room.

I've been following the philharmonic thread for awhile now and there are more than a few people who have put the speakers much closer to the wall than 4' without many real negatives. I know Dennis Murphy has even said that backing the speakers right up to the wall, while certainly not ideal, is possible because the top cabinet isn't as deep as the bottom cabinet which gives the user more flexibility in terms of distance from the wall.

I believe their main suggestions were just to keep them out of corners. I also read somewhere in there, something about closing off the back of the top cabinet for HT use as a possibility, but I'm not sure Dennis has done any measurements with a closed backing to see exactly how that affects the sound.

Hope that helps.

I'd like to hear feedback for customer's using the Phil-1's & Center in a home theater environment. I'm also looking at Ascend's Horizon Center & Towers.

Well a lot of it is repeated information, but any question you could probably have is somewhere in there or could be answered by e-mailing Dennis Murphy. If you're seriously interested in the Philharmonics, I think it's a worthwhile and informational read.

It can seem a bit overwhelming but I managed to read through the AVS thread in like 3 days, only reading for about an hour or two a day. I doubt your rushing to spend a few thousand dollars, so if you're seriously considering getting the Phils reading at least one will help I think, plus there are pictures of ADTGs shiny red Phils in there :D

I'll reach out to him. Any Philharmonic owners that want to share why they would be great for me please don't hold back.

What other speakers or changes should I look into?

I'm going to build a few basic panels for my apartment.

Home Theater Build Part X: How To Make Acoustic Panels | Stuff That Plugs In

I can get Corning 703 practically free and have no carpentry skills. Hopefully these perform better and are cheaper than 1x1 Panels by Auralex, et, al.
703 is fiberglass so make sure you wear gloves and a long sleeve shirt when handling it. I bought my panels from ATS which also has a calculator and supplies like Roxul which is easier to work with.

This is a very old pic but it's what I did with my family room.
