Audio set-up question

I have a Yamaha RX-V2400 that doesn't have hdmi capability, a Denon 2910 DVD with hdmi and a Panasonic plasma with hdmi and a digital audio out jack. I currently run hdmi from the DVD to TV and TOSlink from TV to receiver for the audio but my receiver never seems to recognize that there is a Dolby 5.1 or DTS signal. Is the digital signal from the TV just a "pass through" or would I be better off taking the digital audio directly from the DVD to the receiver?

Some tv's don't pass 5.1, and only output stereo from the optical out jack. You would be best running your toslink cable directly to the receiver.

Yep. What Glocks said. I'd go optical to the receiver and either RCA from receiver to the TV, or RCA directly from the DVD player to the TV if you want to be able to watch a DVD without the receiver being on.

you will loose video up-conversion if you aren't using HDMI. Your receiver I think has multichannel analog inputs for audio have you considered one of the BLurays like LG makes that has the analog audio outputs? just a thought.
