Audio problems with CD's/DVD's.

First off, I didn't know where to put this, so if someone wants to move it, go ahead.

Yesterday I hooked my audio system back up, because we were going to hook up my receiver upstairs, but ended up not doing that.

It's hooked up specifically, because of the speakers I have outside of my room (aka "what should be 'Zone 2'" but I don't have zone 2 on my AVR.)

DVD analog audio ==> CD Input
DVD Coaxial ===> DVD Coaxial
Tape Out ===> Outside speaker outputs

Now, anyways, on with the problem.

I was listening to a Queen DVD I got for Christmas in DTS 5.1 96/24. I was noticing very frequent audio dropouts with the disc, which annoyed me quite a bit but I didn't think much of it. Next up, I had put in a Muse CD (either Absolution, or Black Holes & Revelations. Both are completely unscratched) and noticed the same thing. This was both on the DVD input. I tried the CD input and had not noticed anything out of the ordinary (that I can recall, anyways.) This morning, I was listening to Emily Haines & The Soft Skeleton (again, another unscratched brand new disc) in Dolby PLII Cinema and noticed that:
1. The speakers would cut out, not completely, but drop in volume.
2. An odd clicking noise.

As a side note, the Emily disc was being played from the CD input. I scanned back on the disc to make sure it wasn't the CD itself. Nope. I tried playing it in STEREO for about 20 seconds (I had left my room after that to get ready to go to my cabin, and post this.) and didn't notice anything.

So, is it my AVR or my DVD transport?

I did not have any of these issues when before I had unhooked my receiver. Just after I re set it up post-christmas day.

Thanks,
Travis.

I don't understand your hook up at all. It sounds highly irregular. What is that tape out to outside speaker outputs all about? That in particular makes no sense.

It sounds as if you have done something badly wrong, and the output protection is cycling. If that is so you will soon have an expensive repair bill.

How many sets of speakers are playing at once? You are going to have to describe every connection in detail if anyone is going to help you sort this out. Do not miss a single connection in you reply. And we need to know the rated impedance of every speaker hooked up.

The tape-output goes to an amplifier in my wall for the outside speakers (they need their own seperate amplifier. It's whole house audio. The amplifier in the wall is for a seperate volume control on my wall. The audio output from my receiver just goes to this.) This does not have anything to do with the problem. As far as speakers running all the time:

STEREO: 2 (front left and right)
DOLBY PLII: 6 (Left, Center, Right, 3 rears)

And this isnt loud at all, leading me to beleive that the problem lies with my DVD transport. I don't have any other players to hook up to my AVR to test with though.

I suppose it could be:

1. Dolby PL isnt exactly the best when it comes to recproducing music
2. The cable i'm using for the coaxial ouput...

I wonder if you have an impedance problem with your outside amp. What happens if you pull the plugs from the tape outs? Does the theater volume increase then?

+1 because you listen to Muse! :D:D:D
:p:p:p Muse rocks and you know it! You're just jealous!

TLSGuy, there is no difference between the volume with the outside amp going through the monitor out or not. This also isn't in the theater room, rather my bedroom.

Where are the screen projector and Paradigm speakers, in your bedroom? What speakers are not playing loud enough?

The screen and projector and speakers in my sig are in the theater room. I have an entirley different setup in my room. I should clarify that I meant that when this was happening I wasn't playing the music very loud, not that the speakers arent being inefficent.

I'm going to try a different composite cable.

I've swapped out all of the cables, and it seems to be working on the DVD input with the coaxial connection, in STEREO mode. I should also point out that, aside from the Queen DVD, the dropouts arent very frequent at all (maybe once every hour)

I would start by cleaning the lens on your DVD player.
