Has anyone experimented with using atmos enabled towers as surrounds? Specifically, using the atmos speakers in a pair of atmos enabled towers for the surround channels.

I suspect the result may be less than optimal, but with space at a premium, and with the kids and their toys having first dibs, I am willing to settle.

I wouldn't do it. Atmos enabled speakers require special processing to give the overhead illusion and no receiver has processing like that for the surround outputs. If space is an issue your options are to wall mount a set of speakers or go with 3.1. There are plenty of small satellites that can be easily mounted on the wall.

If 3.1 is the only option you could try using one of the surround processing mode like theater dimensional (onkyo receivers) to get a somewhat convincing surround effect.

Agreed. Even small satellite speakers would be better and not hard to install(unless of course the room is really bazaar). The other thing is atmos enabled modules/speakers operate in a specific pass band and your frequency/dynamic range would be limited. Surround speakers shouldn't be on the floor anyway and I would think if kids are a priority you wouldn't want speakers on the floor for them to play with. I wouldn't do it.
