Hi everyone!!

This has probably been asked before but I'll ask anyhow... Which gives a better experience all around: 5.1.4 or 7.1.2? I'm trying to decide on how best to upgrade my system. Here's what I currently have:

Main Speakers: Definitive Technology 8040 ST
Center: Def Tech 8404
Front Height: Def Tech Cinema 1000
Side Surround: Def Tech Bipole 8040
Rear Surround: Def Tech Bipole 8040
Rear Sub: Def Tech Supercube 2000
Receiver: Yamaha 2020 Aventage
Projector: Epson 5030 UB
Blu Ray Player: Oppo 103 Darbee

Thanks in advance everyone!!

Elio

Interesting question.

I'm not the guy to answer this, but just based on my own HT space and contemplating the same thing you need to supply more info I think.

One question you need to answer is room size and seating proximity to the screen and the back wall of the HT space. Next, are you using upfiring atmos speakers positioned on the floor or downfiring speakers from the ceiling.

From the Dolby layout configs...you don't need a lot of space behind the seating for rear heights. My seating is only 5' off the back wall...I'm going with 2 subs, but I've been told a 5.2.4 setup would be far better than a 7.2.2 for my space...as it stands now I think I'm going with 5.2.2 and see how that goes.

Maybe you've already seen these, but if not.

5.1.4

7.1.2

Good luck with it.

Definitely 5.1.4

I always recommend rear surrounds should be the last pair of speakers added to a system, because the impart very little. Humans aren't that good at pinpoint localization behind us, surrounds placed at 110° behind the mlp will adequately portray rear sounds in 95% of cases.

.4 Atmos a much better immersive experience than .2.
