If you don't recognize the name, she made the song "The Girl From Ipanema" famous. The recording won a Grammy for Record of the Year and sold millions, but all she received was $120 for her session work - no credit on the record and no royalties. She had a wonderful understated singing voice.

Another musician who was famous in the early 1960s dies. Sad and scary.

Her soft whisper & dreamy singing style required close-miking and made for a different sound. That mike placement certainly wasn't new, but that song made it popular. I heard it again this morning on the radio. It awoke an all but forgotten memory.

Thanks for posting that NPR article about her. Even though 'The Girl From Ipanema' became a big hit and made her name well known, at least in the USA, it's a sad example of how ugly the popular music recording business can be. The record companies were briefly thrilled with the idea that the 'Bossa Nova' sound could be marketed in the USA. They scrambled to control it. By 1964, they were scrambling all over again for control, as the British invasion left them out of the picture again.

It seems that almost everyone in the industry took advantage of her right through her career and she never received the compensation she was due.

Great voice. She was married to Joao Gilberto when the Getz/Gilberto album was recorded. So, she did benefit greatly, if not entirely appropriately, from being a part of a historical work. They would divorce and she would move to the USA and later tour with her son in her band. She became a grand mother and lived to 83. So, not exactly a tragic life and definitely a significant contribution to popular music that has stood the test of time. Rest in peace.

I ran across this video about The Girl From Ipanema a while back. I found it quite interesting. The first several minutes are okay, but he really gets into the details of the song later in the video.
