Another musician who was famous in the early 1960s dies. Sad and scary.
Her soft whisper & dreamy singing style required close-miking and made for a different sound. That mike placement certainly wasn't new, but that song made it popular. I heard it again this morning on the radio. It awoke an all but forgotten memory.
Thanks for posting that NPR article about her. Even though 'The Girl From Ipanema' became a big hit and made her name well known, at least in the USA, it's a sad example of how ugly the popular music recording business can be. The record companies were briefly thrilled with the idea that the 'Bossa Nova' sound could be marketed in the USA. They scrambled to control it. By 1964, they were scrambling all over again for control, as the British invasion left them out of the picture again.
