Isn't the puck mic considered bad for calibration vs the tower one?

Not really, different housings, same mic cap capsules...
They are "batch calibrated" - that means they are calibrated to a production average. 80%+ will be on the mark, 95% will be close enough for it not to make a difference in actual use, and about 5% might be substantialy off the mark.
Individually calibrated mikes are better only about 1/20 times - but you get the confidence of knowing that the measurements are correct
