Aspect ratios

I'm wondering what most of you prefer for a screen format. I like 1.85:1 as it makes the most of my screen area. What do you prefer?

I don't really care, so long as I'm seeing the original aspect ratio & not pan&scan.

Depends on the director/cinematographer. Most "modern" directors can't frame a 2.35:1 to save their life. So I like 1.85 as a movie fall-back. But if you do it right, 2.35 is amazing.

Since all HDTVs are 1.78:1 I will take that as what I want to see. I will always choose the native aspect that the film was shot in, except for 1.85:1 which I am happy to take a bit of overscan on to allow it to fill my 1.78:1 screen.

All HD is shot 1.78:1, all HD shows are 1.78:1. Give me 1.78:1 for more movies and I will be thrilled with that! No, I don't want a 1.78:1 Lord of the Rings... But, if it had been shot that way to begin with, I would gladly accept it.

I agree. 2.35:1 is easily my favourite aspect ratio.
