Paradigm speakers...

Hi, it seems like alot of members, including myself seem to have an interest in the Paradigm studio series. A formal review by the Audioholics team on either the Studio 40's, 60's or 100's might be very helpful in making some home-theatre decisions.

Thanx!!

I like showdowns

It would be nice to see more side by side comparisons and reviews. Everyone once in a while, select say 3 pairs of loudspeakers or 3 A/V receivers, comparable in price of course, and review them with their pros, cons, in comparison to each other and see which ones come out on top.

Also, I know I've said this before over and over again, but I'm gonna keep pushing for more PIONEER reviews! Specifically the Elite line!

Paradigm we're working on now. CEDIA is coming up in September and we'll be sure to spend a lot of time making Pioneer contacts.

Infinity speakers.

Though they get sniffed at a lot, it would be interesting to see if the fact that Dr. Floyd Toole is in overall charge of speaker development for Harmon International has been beneficial to the line. He has reportedly brought the rigorous testing protocols he co-developed at the Canadian NRC to Harmon and instituted overall design guidelines based on those. A couple of floorstanding Infinity models have gotten very positive reviews in The Audio Critic over the past couple of years.

And since they're widely available, knowing whether or not an honest value in speakers is as close as your nearest "Circuit Circus" would be welcome info to many here, IMO.

No, I don't work for Infinity or Harmon!

Ascend Acoustics. Nobody has done a review on their new Bookshelf (mini-tower as they call it) CMT-340. I ordered some and they're very nice people, I'm sure they would be happy to participate. And also the higher end Athena stuff. Not the audition series; heard enough about those. And the Bose Acoustic Wave Music System. Heard that thing's a steal at twice the price.

Just kiddin about that last part. Great site.

I'd like to see receiver/speaker reviews of products that don't cost $1000's of $. Not everybody is rich ya know.

They are coming. We just picked up a new writer that will be doing reviews exclusively of inexpensive gear. Stay tuned...

500 dollar receiver shootout

I'd love to see a shootout comparing the 500 dollar AV receivers from the famous five (Onkyo, Denon, Yamaha, Sony, and Pioneer). Yeah, I know it would be a huge undertaking, but it would be very insightful.

Good idea; extend that to shootouts at various price levels (Entry level, Midpriced, Upper-midprice, Flagship?). And how 'bout a new "Receiver Picks" article? Even though its getting old I found the existing one quite informative.

You boys are gonna be busy!

Review Suggestions

I have two comments:

1) I'd like to see all products within a category (receivers, speakers, etc) evaluated using the same scale. Often, I read a review of two products that I'm interested in and one uses a 5 star rating while the other uses a 1-10 rating. It is hard to compare these two reviews to decide which product performed the best.

2) I am fully aware that the ratings are the subjective opinions of the reviewers and I think that this is a perfectly valid way of reviewing this type of equipment. I think that many of the suggestions for “shoot-out” type reviews are a way to get around the problem I addressed in #1. Along those same lines, it would be beneficial to post the definitions of each of the criteria somewhere on the website so that members can reference them when reading the review. For example, when a reviewer gives a set of speakers a 5 in Build Quality, what exactly does that mean? What is the definition of a 4? a 3? a 2? When is the build quality unacceptable? Does a rating of 5 mean “the best Build Quality I have ever seen,” “the best Build Quality at this price point,” or “the best Build Quality that can be achieved?” Many times members (like myself) and perhaps even reviewers are not clear what the differences are. Establishing a specific rubric for each of the categories (and ratings within categories) will help members understand the reviews and use them for comparison purposes. It may also help reviewers to give more objective and less subjective ratings of equipment

I think a review of the JM labs SW900 subwoofer would be interesting. I think it is a very good subwoofer that more people need to know about.
Thanks
