I AM SOOOO FREAKING PISSED OFF RIGHT NOW I HONESTLY DONT KNOW HOW TO CONTROL MY ANGER OTHER THAN TO WRITE ABOUT IT SO I WILL.

ok, let me just breathe for a second.

alright...i will be ok.

Ok, so lets just start from the beginning. so for the past few weeks, my newest and most improved nightmare has been the stupid old grandpa that lives one house down. anyways, it all started off when I came home from exams one day and i brought some friends with me and we all decided to watch a movie on my system. so we put in the disc and start watching our movie but only about 15 minutes in, i hear someone yelling outside (i keep my window open cause it gets really hot in here) anyways, i paused the movie and looked outside and it was mr. annoying grandpa telling me to turn down my music because it was distracting him.. ok... made no sense to me cause i was just watching a movie and i only had the system going at like 50%. whatever though, i listened to him and turned it down... 15 minutes later, he is outside again and he is getting mad at me and telling me to turn it down again. rrrr ummm. fight the urge to say somthing stupid john.... just turn it down..

ok, so i turned the system off and we watched the rest of the movie on the TV speakers (eew) and it sucked.

btw. it wasnt late or anything, maybe like 12:30 PM
-----------------------------------------
a few days later
-----------------------------------------

I am mowing the lawn and i have my music going at a pretty good volume so i can hear it through the window. so im just mowing away and gasp..... mr. grandpa is aproaching me.

"Hello young man, is that your music"
"yeah..."
"Do you mind turning it off please"
"uuuh, im mowing the lawn. i think the mower is louder than the music, i dont understand how the music would be bothering you"
"Well its distracting me and I cant concentrate on watering my flowers, turn it off now and dont talk back to me like that."
"Rams the lawn mower into the fence due to being angry and goes inside to turn off the music."

Time: about 2 PM
--------------------------------------------------------------
a week later
--------------------------------------------------------------

So im sittin in my room, just fooling around on the PC and listening to my music like always but today, i had to keep the window open cause it was really warm outside and it was like cooking in here.

yea so im listening to my music and i hear the doorbell... who could it be...

i left the music on, shut my door and peeked around the corner of the wall to see who was at the door (mom answered it)

Who could it be other than mr. grandpa. but this time. it was even worse. it wasnt just mr grandpa, it was mr vibrating grandpa....
so he comes to the door and starts shaking and yelling at my mother and telling her that my stupid music is shaking the thoughts out of his brain and he starts threatening her with stupid things like "i will report your wreckless child to the police if you dont make him do somthing about his music" and i just kinda laughed to myself and went back to my room....turned down the music a bit to make him happy but obviously it wasnt enough because when he was walking back to his house, he started screaming through my window again.

anyways, to make the long painful story short, i might as well just sell my whole system and replace it for some No-Name brand 2 watt computer speakers because whatever i do, this man will seriously not leave me alone.

I am very cautious about the bylaws here and i know each one of them related to music off by heart such as the one about no music over 60 db's before 10 am and after 10 pm. even if he were to report me to the police, i dont think they could do much and i always use my spl meter to check that im legal (hehe lol)

yeah, so im sitting here, with my headphones, writing this to get it out of my system......

John

My opinion, however wrong it may be...

I think initially you probably had it too loud and just ticked this guy off.

Now, you are just on his radar. He has nothing better to do, so he waits for you to play anything at any level he can hear and will promptly come over to tell you to keep it down, turn it off, etc...

I don't see a way out of this in the near future as he probably has what is approaching hate for you, and I'm sure you don't particularly like this guy either.

You can try extending the fig leaf to smooth things over and swallow your pride in the process (sometimes it is necessary) or you can keep battling with this guy, who will get the cops involved, imo.

It's your choice.

Also, you were playing the music loud enough to hear while you were mowing the lawn? If that isn't totally obnoxious, I don't know what is...unless you live on a farm with no houses around at all...

Eh whatever. im supposed to be moving soon anyways. and about the lawn mower thing, you couldnt really hear it once the lawn mower was running

I just find it so ridiculous that i cant even watch a movie on my HT system. i wonder how this guy is gunna act next week during my grad party. were gunna have the JBL pa speakers outside hooked up to the dj setup while everyone is having fun hot tubbing and swimming and getting drunk.. haha. i can just imagine how this is NOT going to work.

Get a window AC and shut the rest of the windows in the house. If you have central AC and just aren't using it, then I guess you just need to turn that on
and shut the windows. Like the previous post said, if you had the music loud enough to hear over a LAWN MOWER then, yes, it was too loud. Please don't get me wrong, I do like to hear music loud on occasion myself...... but for
myself. Not for everyone else in the neighborhood.

Have you given any thought to playing different music;). All kidding aside the local authorities won't do much because of the time we're talking about, but listening to your music @ 50% is kind of loud. Given his age I'd cut him some slack but he had no right to berate your mother. For that reason I'd look to talk to him and come up with some type of happy medium, for the two of you to coexist!!:)

Yeah we already have a central but we dont use it cause it cools the whole house and for the size that our house is, it costs a lot to run it. i am going to go buy a cheap window AC tonight. thanks for the great idea.

Damn I figured it was rap music!!:p The young guy across the street from me, washes his Mazda every other day, but when the Armour All & Chamois come out RAP NOISE is soon to follow. That's when I go inside and close my window tight with or without AC.:D

I second the idea to talk to the man and try to make some type of happy agreement. I don't know if explaining your passion for music will help, but you could try that (it might possibly make it worse though:()

I'd say strike up a conversation and give him some advance warning about it. Let him know that you've worked hard for the past x number of years to graduate, and you and your friends are going to have a party to celebrate. Personally, I really don't like it when the neighbors that I don't like are loud, but I would certainly cut them some slack if they let me know about it and I knew what it was all about. As for neighbors that I like...their noise doesn't bother me. So, I'm another vote for trying to make the peace with this guy, as he might give you a break if he knows you and gets along with you.

Alright. sooo i just went to his house and tried to tell him about the party thing and he said that is completely unacceptable and that he will call the police.

then i picked up my cell and called an officer that i know and got him to check up on the Calgary noise laws for me. he just got back to me and what do you know...

It turns out that during the time of the Calgary stampede (starts next month on the 7th till the end of the month), it is completely permitted to use a high powered outdoor sound system in a RESIDENTIAL area until 1 am to 7 am.

my party will be on the 14th so i am in luck... hahahahaha

P.S... i know what you mean about the not caring about the noise of the neighbors you like thing. none of my other neighbors care one bit and thats because were cool but this guy is just a little cranky... o well. thats life...

Sounds like he is a grumpy old man. Its sad that you had to resort to completely ignoring him but I can't blame you if you went over there and tried to be reasonable as long as your demeanor wasn't stand-offish.

Hey, good for you. You made an effort, and that's all any of us can really do. It's now in his court. Sounds like he's going to stick with his routine, but you've got the law on your side, so enjoy your party!

Who knows, though. Maybe by the 14th you two will be good friends. :D

Whopeee. you know every 17 year old wants to be besties with old man that is O.C.D with his garden... haha

The party should be fun but i still have lots of preparation to do. i gotta call the maintenance people to look at the pool filter.. ugh, i would never touch that thing if my life depended on it.

just to add. other than the calgary stampede, the city of calgary allows you to play your music at 50 decibels during the night(monday-saturday10 pm to 7 am. sunday 10 pm to 10 am).

Like I told obscbyclouds, that doesn’t matter a disturbance is a disturbance.

By that logic the law is the law. So it wouldn't matter if he was disturbing as long as he was in the letter of the law.

well said...

because according to the law, if you obey that, it technically isnt disturbance. but as long as i dont get in trouble. who cares right.
