Are upconverting DVD players worth the money?

Seriously, I have no life.
There are two major issues with BD & HDDVD. The first is that the marketing idiots are still staging a format war, and if you choose one there is a 50% chance that it will become obsolete (remember Beta?) ...
Something else that is an issue for some of us is that the new formats are not necessarily compatable with older TVs.
I see this 1080p staying around for a while. Cable TV will not increase its resolution anytime soon as the FTC has just set standards and dates for hidef.
Older TVs are becoming obsolete with the new FTC ruling, unless you want to hand on to that old TV and get a conversion box for it to get standard def:eek:

Not sure if the HT market will go for an incremental increase even for large screens; for what benefit? To sit closer to a large screen? Don't think so as your view angle will be too wide:D

My next upgrade will be my receiver. makes no sense for me to invest in a combi player yet until I have TV that will accept these new high def inputs. Thanks for the info :p
You wouldn't want a hidef player unless you have a nice large TV or projector, or, have money to burn:D

...unless, of course, watching a few HD movies spoils me forever and makes standard-def totally unwatchable by comparison. That is the real danger!
Yes, that is indeed a real one. It usually doesn't take long, especially if you have older non-anamorphic discs still hanging around, like Top Gun. I just should have waited for the hi def:eek:

1440p is next. I think they haven't milked the market enought with 1080p for them to release it though....
That might be a tough sell though, even for large HT screens.

Not an issue for me. I don't even think of my TV as a TV per se. It is strictly a "DVD output device".:)

 Argh! Not another HD format change... HD formats are like underwear, change them often and don't let them get crusty LOL

Anyone has the new Sony upconverting DVD player? It upconverts to 1080p. I bought it for about $90 shipped from Amazon and have been using it for the last couple of days. The image quality looks quite nice, better than my old DVD player.

I have an upconverting dvd player (Toshiba), but that wasn't the reason I bought it. I just needed a dvd player that played divx and it just happened to be the cheapest divx capable dvd player that BB had ($50). Since I got my PS3 at the same time I got my new HDTV I haven't really used the upscaler. Unless I am watching a 720p divx which btw look pretty damn good on my TV.

Something else to consider: If you have an older TV, make sure it has HDMI. Mine does not, and I have not run across an upconverting player that will send >480p signals over component.
A Denon 1920 does 480p over component connections. 720p and 1080i only happen with the HDMI connection which I don't have on the display.

He said greater than (>) 480p via component. ALL progressive players will pass 480p via component...
